After 19 seasons in the majors -- 17 of them with the Boston Red Sox -- knuckleballer Tim Wakefieldwill announce his retirement from baseball Friday afternoon. 

He will hold a 5 p.m. ET news conference at JetBlue Park, the team's new spring training facility.

The 45-year-old Wakefield will walk away with 186 victories with the Red Sox, just six short of the team record shared by Cy Young and Roger Clemens. He picked up his 200th career victory late last season. He had been extended an invitation to Red Sox spring training but was not guaranteed a roster spot.

Wakefield, who finished last season with a 7-8 record and a 5.12 ERA in 23 starts, won just one of his last 10 starts, with the bullpen failing to hold several leads.

When the Red Sox desperately needed someone in September to step up and pitch a big game, Wakefield gave up five or more runs in each of his last four starts, lasting five or fewer innings in three of them.

He finishes with a career mark of 200-180 with a 4.41 ERA and 2,156 strikeouts. He was part of the Red Sox's World Series-winning teams in 2004 and 2007. After starting his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wakefield was traded to the Red Sox before the 1995 season.

A great career!  Sadly I might remember him most for the Aaron Boone HR!

CINCINNATI (AP) — Former Oakland Raiders coach Hue Jackson has been hired as an assistant with the Cincinnati Bengals.

On the staff with Cincinnati from 2004-06, Jackson will help with the secondary and special teams, and work closely with the position coaches for both slots, Mark Carrier and Darrin Simmons, respectively.

A native of Los Angeles, Jackson played quarterback at the University of the Pacific and began his coaching career there in 1987. He coached in the NCAA through 2000, when he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Southern California. He entered the NFL with the Washington Redskins in 2001.

Jackson was fired after the Raiders missed the AFC playoffs with an 8-8 record last season.

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) -- "Monday Night Football" is switching to a two-man booth.

ESPN said Wednesday that analyst Ron Jaworski had signed a five-year contract extension to appear on other programming on the network and would no longer join play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico and color commentator Jon Gruden on Monday nights.

Jaworski called "Monday Night Football" games the past five seasons. The former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback will work various ESPN studio shows year-round.

Gruden joined MNF in 2009 after coaching the Raiders and Buccaneers and agreed to a five-year extension in October. This is the first time in 15 years ESPN has used a two-person lead team on its NFL game coverage.
