Victorino likes new playoffs, wants even more

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- In a way, baseball's new expanded playoffs are set up to benefit a team like the Phillies, who have won their division five straight years but twice were beaten by a wild-card team in the first round.

But if the playoffs are changing, as it's now expected that they are, Shane Victorino wants more.

"Why not make all three series seven games?" Victorino said Wednesday. "That's what I'd like."

Victorino's Phillies lost a best-of-5 first-round series to the wild-card Cardinals last October, after leading the major leagues in the regular season with 102 wins. The Phillies lost to the wild-card Rockies in the first round in 2007.

One big benefit from the new system is that it will reward division winners, and particularly the team with the best record in each league. It will make it harder, although certainly not impossible, for a wild-card team to advance to the World Series.

That should make the regular season more meaningful.

It also guarantees baseball a pair of knockout games to begin the postseason.

"I think it's great for baseball to have that extra game," Victorino said.

The team that survives the one-game wild-card playoff will face the team with the league's best record, after already burning through its best available pitching and also having to travel.

Of course, the Phillies had a chance to set up their pitching going into the first round last year, and the Cardinals, who didn't clinch the wild card until the final moments of the season, did not. And the Phillies still lost.

Would they have lost if the series had been best-of-7?

There's no way to know that, and we do know that a best-of-7 first round isn't happening right now. A second wild card team is happening, and it's extremely likely that it happens this year.

I don't know how anyone can say that it makes it harder for a wild card to win the World Series ? The 2007 Rockies were hotter than the Phillies at the end of that season, they swept the Phillies and proved it. The Cardinals last season, same thing, they won fair and square. Even if it goes 7 games, do the Phillies win 2 straight vs the Cardinals without Ryan Howard blowing up his achilles ? Would the Phillies have been good enough to beat the Brewers without Howard after limping thru a 7 game series had they gotten past the Cardinals. Any of these seasons are so long that it's who is hot at the end that has taken it. The Giants were 1 game better than the Braves, Braves actually played the Giants tougher than anyone else that season. Just me, but a 1 game playoff between the 2 wild cards ? That happens when 2 teams tie for the division ? I guess they still would have that 1 game tie breaker for the division, then if the loser is a wild card, they go play the other wild card ?To me, a 1 game series for 2 wild cards is pointless, mabe best of 3 or even 5 ? Then have the best of 7's start to even determine a WS champion ?

best of 5 , I would prefer the League championship series to be best of five AND in a 2/3 format instead of the annoying 2/2/1 format.
Frostbite -- good one.  ALso, wasn't it the 2/3 format as a normal thing until about 1996?  I know that when Seattle played NY in 95, the first two games were in NY and then the final 3 were in Seattle.  So did this change at one point and never go back?

I could see the 2/3 to avoid travel for just one game in a game 5 situation.  Even the NBA admitted that the reason they did the 2-3-2 in the finals was to have a tad less travel for that particular final round.

Quick question....who gives a flying flip what shane victorino thinks about new playoff setup?  Why not ask what Lyle Overbay what he thinks, or maybe Ty Wigginton, or some other random player?  Is this really the best material you guys can come up with?

Frostbite I like the way you think. I agree with the 5 game set up.

What are the tie breakers? Could there be a one game play in just to get to the one game wild card game? Well I don't like the idea of more games and extending the season any later. It seems that at some point a .500 or less team could slip in the playoffs. If that happens it makes the season meaningless.

As far as extra wild card, as I posted on another article I think it would have been better if they simply did not give the wild card team a home game.

As far as best of 7 or best of 5 , I would prefer the League championship series to be best of five AND in a 2/3 format instead of the annoying 2/2/1 format. in a 2/3 format in order for the lesser team to win they have to do it on the opponent's field. In a 2/2/1 they can potentially have 2 chances to clinch on their own field. Add to that if the better team wins, unless they do it in a game 5 they will win it on the other guy's field.

The argument that the one game playoff will help the team with the best record might not ring true as the Wild Card teams might not have thier aces available for that one game but they might have him avaiable for game one of a division series,

I hope baseball ALWAYS has the best of 5 LDS series.  Much drama, it doesn't drag on (like the NBA tends to do.. NBA should have kept the best of 5 first round)..

And let's face it, if your team wins the first round, great!  If your team loses, then it's usually "Shoot, they should make these best of 7" ....

Keep it best of 5!  So classic.  Even the LCS used to be the best of 5, and the next round was the WS!  Now that's quick!
