BoSox manager decision to drag out later in week

The curious case of the Red Sox manager search drags on: Though Boston appears close to choosing between veteran baseball men Bobby Valentine and Gene Lamont, that decision will not come on Tuesday, according to sources with knowledge of the Red Sox plans.

With Valentine apparently flying home from Japan on Tuesday, speculation early Monday centered on the Sox informing the two men of their choice later Tuesday. But Boston is said to not be ready to make a decision by then.

Industry speculation has Valentine, 61, as the favorite to get the job, though he is nowhere close to the parameters of the first group of candidates brought in to interview by the Red Sox. New general manager Ben Cherington appeared to be looking for a solid baseball man without much managerial pedigree, a guy who would grow into the Boston job and may be open to front-office suggestions.

That man is not Valentine, who will do things his own way -- and who was contacted by Red Sox president Larry Lucchino after Dale Sveum accepted the Cubs job. Sveum was among the first group to interview with Boston and appeared to be Cherington's first choice.

Valentine guided the Mets to their last World Series appearance in 2000, managing them for parts of seven seasons after piloting the Rangers for parts of eight seasons.

Lamont, 64, is Detroit's third-base coach, managed the White Sox from 1992-1995 and was named as AL Manager of the Year in '93 when the Sox won the AL West title. He had the Sox in first place again in 1994 when the players' strike occurred and the season was wiped out. He also managed Pittsburgh from 1997-2000.

With the new ownership in Houston and the recent firing of the team president and general manager, the Red Sox may be waiting to see if they can get Brad Mills back. He would meet the qualifications they're looking for.

They could hire a monkey and it would be an immediate improvement over Flunkona.   Get on with it.

I can't believe this is actually happening. Its like a bad dream. I cannot fathom why they are not interviewing more people with a little less experience. It seems Theo was able to keep Larry Lucchino out of the picture for a while but now that he is gone Lucchino is going to drive this franchise into the ground.

I'm actually glad they have delayed a decision as reported yesterday.  I think both Valentine and Lamont are bums and they need to think outside the box with a guy like Davey Lopes.  Lopes is a little older at 67, but knows his baseball.

If I was GM though (all our dream job), I'd be banging on Curt Schilling's door to encourage him to take the job.  The guy knows the city, the players, and the game like the back of his hand.  And Curt doesn't mess around.  He'd whip that clubhouse into shape immediately!

The only reason the annoucement hasn't come yet is that they want to be able to introduce their manager at the press conference and it's kind of difficult to introduce someone who is in Japan.  He hasn't even been hired yet and he is already making the Red Sox something less than his top priority, if Valentine was doing more than just mouthing off whatever he thought was the PC thing to say he would have postponed his trip to Japan until after the Red Sox had announced their decision.  Now, the whole organization is forced to wait while Bobby V. decides it's more important to fly half way around the world to pick up an appearance fee than it is to show a little loyalty to the Red Sox and MLB.  Get used to it Boston, Valentine is a smart guy but he's also just about the most egocentric candidate they could have picked.  My prediction is that Beckett ignores him and is drinking beer and eating chicken in the clubhouse in April, daring Valentine to do anything about it, and when all that comes down is a slap on the wrist - are you really going to suspend your best pitcher? - than Lester and Buchholz will follow suit shortly thereafter and there goes the season.  This is not the way to solve their number one problem - the Red Sox have plenty of talent, what they need is discipline, and on that front Valentine is the opposite of a Joe Torre, he is the source, not the solution, for friction and antagonism.  Brad Mills, please come home ASAP.

Actually Lamont is a a likes to eat & meal $ manager.  He`s a tired choice and clearly a guy you`d have to replace sooner than later.
I don`t see his quiet non-Leyand like approach turning around the Red Sawx frat house...ERR dugout. Not having a manager yet shows the problems they have and will continue to have into 2012.
