Bobby Valentine

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Well, earlier Monday former Red Sox manager Terry Francona said the Red Sox ban on alcohol in the clubhouse was a "PR move." Current Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine didn't give a "PR" or "PC" response.

"Remember," Valentine told reporters, including the Boston Herald's Scott Lauber, "you're getting paid over there for saying stuff. You get paid over here for doing stuff. I've done both."

It should be noted, Francona's done both too -- and has two more rings than Valentine.

Valentine continued -- "How was it PR?" he asked. "It means like 20 teams are looking for PR and that's why they're making good decisions."

Valentine did say he had the same rule in his last big-league managerial job with the Mets.

With ESPN's penchant to overblow everything Red Sox and Francona on its payroll, it's safe to say this won't be the last time Francona is asked about a Boston controversy -- and Valentine will object to whatever is said. Valentine is always entertaining, and with Francona in his new gig and a microscope on both, there should be plenty of fun for onlookers this season.

Bobby V. fires back at Terry Francona

Not that I need to bother, but I'll give you a little background rox. I have been a Red Sox fan for years and always rooted for them to put a beatdown on the Yanks. This is nothing against Sox, but all about Valentine. He has been a major tool dating back to the mets, and it doesn't appear as though that is going to change based on his performance so far. Total jerkoff!

Hmmm.. Beck and V. had a "great chat"?  Bechett's attitude from last year is "gone"?  Definitively?  Are you Josh's BFF or something?  Were you there?  Or is that statement based on something you've read or seen in a TV sound bite or two?

My point is that seeing is believing.
Remember that story about Beckett ready to move on from last years debacle?  He knows they messed up and now it's a new year, new outlook, etc, and he was all in for this coming year. Also he said that he and the new manager had the great chat(s)?  Valentine confirmed this, though he didn't want to go into details since it was between manager and player and it was confidential.  I think that right there, along with Beckett's confirmations, says that this is not something phony.
Seeing is believing, sure -- I was just putting out there the fact that Beckett doesn't seem like he's gonna be a head case *all year**.... wow that would be weird!

I am a Yankees fan and have hated/loved Beckett ever since he shut down the Yanks in game 7 of the 2003 World Series.  Hated him of course because of his stellar pitching against the Yanks - then and since.  Loved him because you HAVE to admire the bulldog in him and the results.

But last year - facts are facts - he let his team and his manager down with his lack of professionalism.

To regain the respect - of "friend and foe" alike - I think we need to SEE it, not read it or hear it.

I just checked your profile and now I get it. You're not a Red Sox fan and you live out in California. Unless you're listening to Boston radio online, I'd be willing to bet I've heard a bit more from them recently than you. That's pretty obvious from your statement that Beckett's attitude is gone. You apparently didn't hear his recent interview. And yes, AG is quite clueless. And if there's one spot where the Red Sox still can't seem to figure out, it's SS. How many guys have played the position since 2004? How many of them were actually good? Bobby V is one of the most annoying men I've ever seen give a press conference. As for Lackey, that's true he isn't playing and how many $85 million pitchers are fans HAPPY to lose for a whole season?

TheClass_rox, I'll be looking forward to that year or two you're taking off. I gave my opinion of the Red Sox and you.....give your (condescending and insulting) opinion of me? Undecided

It will be nice to know I don't have to worry about personal insults and attacks from you for a couple of years.

I think I'm taking a year or two off from bizona' posts.

Valentine......Josh Beckett's comments and attitude.....Adrian Gonzalez's cluelessness......John Lackey (everything about him).......last September........the ownership.........no shortstop......

Valentine and Beckett have had great chats and the Beckett tude from last year is gone.  AG isn't clueless -- but bizona is.  Lackey isn't even playing in 2012, last Sept isn't March of 2012 ... ownership is better than most in the league today.  Shortstops are made in the spring-- they are an MLB club which means they will figure it out.

I can handle bizona, but I'm done with the drama, the lack of accountability, the poor attitudes, the arrogance, the scapegoating, of bizonas posts.

I can handle losing, but I'm all set with the drama, the lack of accountability, the poor attitudes, the arrogance, the scapegoating, etc.

I think I'm taking a year or two off from the Red Sox.  Yell

I'm not going to defend the comments of my two fellow Phans below, which strike me as sort of silly.  However, I do have to comment on part of  Color Me Gone's response:

Phillies isn't that a girls team . . .?
If it is, it's one that's won a World Series more recently than the Red Sox have.  And the '08 Sox must have fallen a long way if they could lose to a team that lost to a team of "girls".

But I'll save you the trouble of coming up with pejorative names for the Phils.  I've seen "Phrillies", "Phoolies", "Phailies", "Phlunkies", "Sillies", along with others I've forgotten, and perhaps my favorite such nonsense, the "Lady Horses".  (It does have a touch of elegance, if nothing else.)

Unlike you, I make no predictions as to how the season will go, for either team.

And we'll see how that new closer of ours does--what's his name again?

Seriously, Sox fans, I'd rather see your team win the AL East than the Yankees.  Have at 'em.

Wow - how keenly analytical, so very informative and highly literate these last few posts are.

What's next - "See Spot run"?

Dictionaries, keyboard lessons and hits-over-the-head with an old copy of the McMillan Baseball Encyclopedia for you!

For me.... after reading these.... I think I need a beer.  :-)
