Jonathan Niese

By C. Trent Rosecrans

It's not unusual to hear of teammates giving each other gifts -- from watches to cars and just about everything in between. But this is a new one.

Carlos Beltran, now a Cardinal, got Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese a new nose.

Yep, Beltran paid for Niese's nose job this offseason after making a playful barb that Niese needed a new nose. Beltran went so far as to offer to pay for it, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

"He wanted me to have a new nose," Niese told Rubin. "So he offered to pay for it. I was just like, 'All right.' Then it turned into seeing doctors and to getting it fixed."

The picture above, is clearly the "before."

The surgery may have also been a performance-enhancer for the 25-year-old left-hander. He said the surgery has helped him breathe better.

"It's helped a lot with my running," Niese said. "It helps with my working out. As far as the mound, I'm not sure."

Niese was 11-11 with a 4.40 ERA in 27 games and 26 starts last season, striking out 138 batters in 157 1/3 innings.

Re: earlier comment - The Mets would have paid for the nose job, but had examined Niese and determined that he had bunions.

Perception my friends!!!!!

The Mets seem to have the worst medical staff of MLB.  The list runs too long to even attempt at explaining.  But, here goes:

David Wright: Fractured back that took weeks to find......

Carlos Beltran 2010 season: Lets get knee surgery a week before the regular season starts

Ike Davis, Daniel Murphy, and Johan Santana.

I understand the Mets have financial issues but look at Jose Reyes: Known hamstring issues every year.  At what point does MLB step in and review the Mets issues?  NOSE JOB?  ARE THEY KIDDING BY MAKING THIS NEWS!!!!!!!!!

HA! The Mets and a medical plan is sort of like Rex Ryan and a diet. It would be like his twin brother and anything not resembling a homeless version of the shoney's big boy!

Niese has said that Beltran has yet to pay for it, however.  And sure Niese wasn't exactly pretty, but is Carlos Beltran really the guy to be pointing that out?  The Flushing Faithful had to stare at that birthmark of his for years.  Carlos clearly had the money to have that thing removed...

I'm doubting that the Mets have a good medical plan, what with all of their other financial woes.

I also heard that Niese was originally told by team doctors that his nose was fine, and it was simply a problem with all of the mirrors he was using.

Haha Beltran is funny. Too bad it never really worked out with the Mets, I always did like Beltran but didn't think he could live up to the absurd hype the Mets were giving him.
