Report: Okajima fails physical with Yankees

By Matt Snyder

The Yankees had signed relief pitcher Hideki Okajima to a minor-league contract, likely to provide left-handed depth. As things currently stand, Boone Logan is the only lefty in the Yankees 'pen. And it appears that's how things will be moving forward, as Okajima has failed his physical and will not be in Yankees camp, reports Sweeny Murti of WFAN.

There is no word just yet as to why Okajima failed the physical, just that he failed it.

Okajima, 36, pitched for the Red Sox last season, sporting a 4.32 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in just 8 1/3 innings -- he spent most of his time in the minors. He has spent his entire five-year MLB career with the Red Sox. He was an All-Star in 2007, but his numbers have gotten progressively worse pretty much each season since then.

Report: Okajima fails physical with Yankees

Really do the Yankees need a LH RP to win the AL East?  No!  Are the Yankees desperate to sign one? No!  Desperation is what the rest of MLB feels.  When you are a 27 time Champion you NEVER feel desperation.  Quality LH pitching of any type is hard to come by.  The Yankees took a flyer on Okajima for pocket change...no harm done.  It was determined by the scouts the gas tank was empty and he was hurt on top of it.  What the hey nobody got hurt here.  Match ups between lefty vs lefty and righty vs righty are really overblown these days.  I'll take a right hand or left hand pitcher throwing smoke or being able to pitch to a spot vs whatever side of the plate the hitter is standing on.  The Yankees did win the AL East last year with combustable Boone Logan in the pen didn't they?  Whats wrong with the same formula this year? Nothing!  If a quality LH SP or RP becomes available the Yankees and 31 other ball clubs will try and sign him.  Don't blast Cashman and the Yankee brass for taking a look at in the end was a washed up LH reliever.  Theres going to be about a 100 or more washed up past and present Major Leaguers trying to win a roster spot in about a week.  Okajima really isn't a story!

Report: Okajima fails physical with Yankees

The yankees are really taking out the pitching trash this week, mainly AJ off to the Steel city but old man Okajima was used up by Francoma.  They already have combustible Boone Logan, no need to cart a soft tossin lefty who couldn`t get anyone out.  Cyonora for now, try the Lowly O`s they`ll take any pitching.

Report: Okajima fails physical with Yankees

I'm sure when the Yankees were deciding that they needed Okajima"s left arm in the bull pen they had the same idea that almost all professional teams do in these situations. Lets pick this guy up who just played five years with our biggest rival and see if he has anything left in the tank and as a bonus let us just see what kind of inside dirt he can give on top of that.  Just like the article says and something obvious to anyone who can count to ten , Okajima's numbers have gotten worse every year for the past five years.  Does anyone know of any other mlb team that was interested in this guy?  Sounds to me like the Yankees had buyers remorse but saved their receipt.  Glad they only gave him a minor league contract, they seem to be easier to ditch! Having said that this whole situation shows how desperate the Yankees are to get a hold of a south paw in their pen!

I don't understand why the Yankees were even interested in Okajima to begin with.  I mean were they trying to "stick it" to the Red Sox or did they really think they would get something good out of Oki?

Oki's cholesterol was sky high from all of the fried chicken consumed in between innings last year!  There's medication for that!  He'll be OK!

My guess maybe something showed up on a xray with the shoulder or elbow. Makes sense when you think he has progressively gone downhill.

More sour grapes from a Patsy/Red Sux fan. But then what else would you expect. Lol....
