Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford is expected to miss "a few weeks" of the regular season, says manager Bobby Valentine (via Pete Abraham). Crawford is recovering from minor surgery on his left wrist, an arthroscopic procedure he had back in the middle of January. Abraham also reports that Crawford can currently do everything except hit -- obviously he could run, but this also means he can use his left hand in the field.

The beginning of Crawford's Red Sox career couldn't have gone much worse. After signing a seven-year, $142 million contract, the four-time All-Star had the worst season of his career. He hit .255/.289/.405 with just 65 runs and 18 steals. Now it appears he'll miss a few weeks before being able to join his teammates in 2012, as they wish to erase the disaster that was the 2011 finish.

With Crawford out -- as we pointed out in the AL East position battles -- expect Cody Ross and Ryan Sweeney to man the corner outfield spots, flanking center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. Darnell McDonald will then serve as the fourth outfielder.

Crawfords limp wrist will be a built in excuse for another bad season. This guy is Jose Reyes without the talent.

Um, there's one rather large error in this story; Crawford's left-handed, so his left hand is his throwing hand.

Wish he would have had the surgery earlier than mid-January.  It'll be May/June before he is close to being 100% and in top baseball shape.

I've never understood this surgery timetable athletes/teams seem to use so frequently. Crawford last played Sept 28th and he/they wait almost 4 months to schedule MINOR surgery? Wouldn't it be prudent to schedule it say a month after the season ends so to be sure there are no complications and further procedures aren't needed? This reminds me a little of Shaq as he neared the end of his career. I recall at least one, maybe two, instances where Shaq had surgery a very short time before the NBA season started, which would guarantee he plays significantly less regular season games and therefore be healthier for the playoffs. The difference between Shaq's late surgery and Crawford's is that it was the intention behind Shaq's was to have him play less regular season games, limiting wear and tear on his overweight body. Crawford's just makes little sense.

Crawford is such a talent, his past year was not pretty. The year earlier was skewed with a hot streak that pumped up his numbers and value. I like guy but this has to be his year. Enough injuries to merit support for lackluster results, but now is the time for Crawford to dominate. I hope he can put it together.

TrueGrit isn't the only one who blamed Francona for the Red Sox problems last year. People who have the power to dictate who will coach the Red Sox also placed blame on Francona.

Ridiculous? No idea what I'm talking about? Francona had the most secure season ticket in Red Sox history because of his 2004 and 2007 success but somehow he managed to lose that ticket. Amazing but true!

Crawford can miss the whole season as far as I am concerned. What a disappointment he was last season. Too bad they can't trade this guy, but who would want him for such big $$$? The Sox need to bring back Freddy Lynn and Dewey Evans.

Blaming francona for the Red Sox problems is ridiculous. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Also, when did joe Maddox take over the Rays.

It would be difficult trying to "blame" any one player on last years Red Soix collapse. If at least 5 other "overpaid "players performed up to their expectations, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Crawford had a bad year by his standards, but I wouldn't pass judgement on him yet. Remember he played half of every season in the rediculously designed dome of Tropicana Field, with an average attendance of around 20,000, most whom were Senior Citizens. It is a big jump for him to play in Boston before a packed house every home game. with screaming diehard fans.  Plus the Boston Media is brutal to all their athletes....a very tough place to play. I suggest we see what he does this year, and chalk up last year as a total TEAM disaster
