Canseco earns tryout with Mexican team

Shockingly unable to get a deal with the A's by asking on Twitter, Jose Canseco is headed to Mexico in an attempt to restart his baseball career.

Canseco, 47, earned a tryout with the Quintana Roo Tigers of the Mexican League, the team announced on Sunday.

The former MVP and Rookie of the Year had taken to Twitter to beg A's general manager Billy Beane for a tryout earlier this offseason. Beane, obviously, didn't bite.

Canseco last played in the majors in 2001 for the White Sox and in the minor leagues for the White Sox in 2002. In parts of 17 seasons Canseco hit .266/.353/.515 with 462 home runs, in a career he's admitted was aided greatly by steroids.

Last year, Canseco played in 64 games with the Yuma Scorpions of the North American Baseball League, hitting .256/.371/.427 with eight home runs. He played in other independent leagues in 2001, 2006 and 2010.

Canseco took to Twitter on Sunday to confirm the news.

Hey fathobbits; you bring up an interesting point. "Juiced", the movie. Starring Antonio Banderas as Jose; Ricky Martin as twin brother Ozzie; Mark Walberg as Mark McGuire; Selma Hayek as Jose's love interest; Gene Hackman as Tony LaRussa; Matt Damon as Carney Lansford and introducing Alex Rodriguez as the steroid dealer. Other cameo appearances by Lenny Dykstra, Dutch Dalton, and Rafael Palmiero are also being considered. Hollywood insiders say the thrilling toilet stall scene between Big Mac and Jose is nearly impossible to view, but still too difficult to turn away from.

Good stuff Willy. I think of steroid snitching in terms of Serpico, compared to Ray Liotta's character in Copland. Serpico was the only honest cop on the force and got thrown under the bus when he refused to play dirty. I think in baseball, Gabe Kapler was kind of like that, although he didn't necessarily snitch on anyone, he just watched less talented guys outplay him on steroids. Meanwhile, in Copland, Ray Liotta was a dirty cop with a conscience who went out and shotgunned his former pals with Sly Stallone once his conscience got the better of him. Is a dirty cop come-to-god a snitch? Or a man of conscience? Does it matter, in the end, if they get the truth out there? But point taken, you're probably right, all Canseco did was for Jose Canseco and no one else, so it's hard to like him or his actions.

Why does the media insist on reporting about this trash?  Who cares what he is doing?  He is completely insignificant and not even worth the effort anymore.

Just in answer, yes, Canseco is hurting for money pretty badly. I've heard him storm off radio shows at WEEI and elsewhere when they bring up the fact that he seeks compensation for straight up journalism interviews now. He's been pushing like a madman since 2006 to get his book "Juiced" made into a "Moneyball" type movie. Funny, it someday has to become a movie, too, but probably not until this generation of players are all long out of baseball and the truth can come out in a more verified way. I think Canseco is second only to Bonds as baseball's least likable star, but the guy still got a raw deal from baseball and the media in his playing days and after. If a guy like Ken Caminiti or McGwire had come out and admitted being a roider and pointed the finger in a way that didn't pander to profits, they'd be called heroes. Jose is just such a slimy dude, it's hard to see what he did is, in its way, fairly heroic.

The one thing about Jose was that he was and still for the most part is the only honest one out of all of the roiders. Everybody laughed at his first book. But a lot of it has been proven true.
