Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane and president Michael Crowley could be running things for owner Lew Wolff for a long time. The two executives have agreed to sign contract extensions through the 2019 season, the owner said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

Oakland's Busy Offseason
“I view them as partners as well as executives,” Wolff said ( “So if they are here another 30 years, that is fine with me. I may not be here to see it, but that will be fine.”

Immediately after the news broke, several Oakland area reporters noted on Twitter that this is a great sign the A's are going to get their new stadium in San Jose. Wolff himself hinted as much.

“Somebody said the reason I am doing it is I want one or the other to be able to wheel me into the new stadium,” Wolff said (

Beane has been the GM since the end of the 1997 season while Crowley has been president since the end of the '98 campaign. Beane, 49, is famously portrayed by Brad Pitt in the movie "Moneyball," which was released last summer. Under this management tandem, the A's went to the playoffs five times in seven years (2000-03, 2006). On the flip-side, the A's haven't been above .500 since 2006 and finished 74-88 last season.

PeopleWillCome - LOL. You keep rooting for Beane and them A's. He is the WORST gm in baseball, and it's not even close. The A's have steadily drifted into mediocrity since he took over. He just traded away anything resembling a major league player on the roster. The Gio Gonzalez trade alone was criminal. But, if that's what you enjoy you can certainly continue to root for him and his pathetic team, or maybe go for a team with better prospects like the Scrubbies!! LOL.

Krig you hit the nail on the head. The staff with the Rays are good. The Rays put a quality product out but they are doomed to be a Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts, and Seattle SuperSonic. They had great fans not the greatest place to play. Would I say it was greed? No, but if your rival is making half a billion a year because of the stadium you play in maybe you want to go to where you make the money. Two of those teams won championships and the Thunder may be close. T,B. fans buy some tickets or you may need to drive to San Antonio to see them at home. A's fans I'm glad I am not one. There is no chance the team will win the division in the next five years, sorry but that is reality.

@krig51:  You really need to get a map or some other source for your information.  The city of Tampa has many MLB teams as does Portland, ZERO.  The Rays play in St. Petersburg!!!!!

beane has made more bad deals than good deals over the years, in my opinion.
topped it off recently by trading away more solid players, for some prospects,
who he'll trade or sell away if they should ever flourish.

not sure why so many think he's such a great GM.
i realize he doesn't have alot of $$ to work with,
but tampa's GM done a much better job the past few years, with similarly low payrolls (where's his movie ?!  lol)
beane had the fortune of lucking out with many over-achieving players in the past.
those days are gone.  along with any hope for the organization in the short-term.

give them a better ballpark & more money,
and he'll probably still continue the "moneyball" scheme (instead of fielding a consistantly competitive team)
that has failed miserably the past 5 years (while tampa has battled the yanx & redsox, and still made playoffs 3 of last 4 years).
doubt lots of games vs the astros & mariners will help the A's much in 2012.
is 8 more years of beane dispatching their stars really what oakland needs ?

sorry if i seem harsh, but i've been to tons of games at the "mausoleum" over the years.
awful atmosphere there nowadays. and not just because of the venue/location.
A's fans are perpetually disheartened.  hard to establish any fan/player loyalty with all the turnover.

It isn't an ownership issue. The main issue here is the crappy ballpark the A's play in. The Sacramento AAA team plays in a park that is superior in every way but seating capacity. The Giants continue to hold up the A's efforts to move to San Jose. If MLB lets the A's make the move. there will be money for payroll enough to actually compete.

Anybody but anybody who thinks that Beane is "the worst GM in baseball" is just not well-informed at best and delusional at worst.  I mean come on!  With the circumstances he's had to work under, "the WORST GM"?  How does somebody who thinks that, much less writes that, actually get taken seriously here - or in life?

'Have already said more than I wanted to regarding the dumbfounding post(s).  Regarding Beane - I Do hope he and the A's do get the new park and Do get an opportunity - sometime in the near future - to field a major league contender with something other than a minor league budget.

WOW!  He just traded away his whole team.  I liked Billy Beane but if the A's are going to stink for another 7 years then that stinks for Baseball!  Nothing against Billy Beane but this team needs to be relocated and Bud Selig needs to find another owner!  An owner that wants to spend some money!  I understand that Beane traded for some unproven prospects but this method can't be successful often - Maybe Billy Beane can put a group together with former A's and other business partners to b uy this team.  There's absolutely no reason for this team to try to compete on a yearly basis1  They have a smart GM who continues to rebuild.  Let him get a group together and buy the team.  Let it happen Bud!  Let it happen!

Beane is the worst gm in baseball and the movie was a joke. Good luck oakland, at least you can go across the bay and root for the Giants.

Why, so he can gut the team for he next decade?  Current formula = subtract good player under control for years to come for 2 kids in diapers that may hit .225 in 5 years times.  Do you really need Billy Beane for that?   I could do it with an excel spreadsheet.  Hmm, lets see, player A breaks into big leagues, in 2 years time trade him.  Done. Next!
