Reyes to get dreads cut on MLB Network Friday

By Matt Snyder

Bye bye, dreads.

When star shortstop Jose Reyes signed a lucrative contract to play with the Miami Marlins for the next six years, he knew he would have to leave more than his Mets career behind. Per Marlins policy, Reyes' hair is too long and he'll have to hack off the dreads. In and of itself, that's pretty boring news -- you can look at the picture above to get a decent idea of how he'll look, even though that picture was taken back in 2003.

But this is news because Reyes is making an event of cutting his hair.

“It’s official: Jose Reyes will cut off his trademark long hair Friday on the MLB Network. More details to follow,” tweeted Reyes' agent, Chris Leible Tuesday night (via Fish Tank blog).

So, if this sort of thing interests you, watch Reyes' haircut on MLB Network Friday. I can't say I'll be tuning in for that, but hey, to each his own.

Reyes to get dreads cut on MLB Network Friday

3 pages of comments about how this story is not news, but there IS a story here.

How many of the clubs have rules like this about how long a players hair can be?  What other rules do they have?  Restrictions on facial hair?  Tattoos?  Piercings?

I'm not even saying I'm against a team having a say in the appearance of its players.  I would just like to know how widespread these kinds of rules are and how strict they are.

There is an interesting story here, it just was barely  touched on in the article.

I hope he does something like take out his dreads and washes his hair before Friday so he is able to donate his hair to a charity like Locks of Love.  Would be a nice gesture on his part.

Cool with, cool without. I'd gladly have Reyes on my baseball team. I think it should be the players choice, optional, owner could suggest, player has the choice (about the hair, like, so what, really? Yet, so what about cutting it, too.). Yo! Samson! Get some steals and some runs now! Bat that ball around!   I hope he can stay healthy, that would be good for the game!

He has to look good since the Marlins sold out 30,000 tickets for the Canes game next month.
