Ryan Theriot signs with Giants

Free agent infielder Ryan Theriot has signed a one-year contract with the Giants, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman has learned. The deal is worth $1.25 million and has $750,000 worth of incentives.

Though Theriot better fits defensively as a second baseman, he has a great shot at significant playing time at shortstop for the Giants. The only person standing in his way is Brandon Crawford, who hit just .204/.288/.296 last season, which is dreadful. Crawford could then fit well as a late-inning defensive replacement, as he's the superior defender. It's just that the Giants need the most offense they can get from any spot.

Theriot, 32, hit .271/.321/.342 with 26 doubles for the World Series champion Cardinals last season. He has spent all but 54 games of his career in the NL Central, mostly with the Cubs, but those other 54 games were in the NL West with the Dodgers in 2010.

Also of note, Theriot rejoins former LSU and Cubs teammate Mike Fontenot. Those two just can't be kept apart, huh?

torbon is correct.  SF just signed a guy who is a real gamer.  He plays hard at all times, is fundamentally sound and he is a consummate teammate.  He has busted his a** at every level, and I am going back to LSU when he led them to the CWS Championship.  Fontenot is a similar type player with slightly more power, but the same makeup as Theriot.  I hope SF makes room for both on the roster.  They will play key roles in helping the Giants contend this year.

Giants signed Ryan Theriot.  Pencil them in for the World Series
Ryan Theriot is an excellent back-up @ 2B/SS. He's the kind of player who actually helps teams get to the World Series. Let's not forget they're 2 years removed from the WS, which they won.

The Giants have improved themselves just by letting that underachieving, oft-injured, overrated Mr. Softie Carlos Beltran go. They have a deep rotation which is the only one in the NL that matches the Phillies and have their catcher Posey returning and have added a nice OF piece in Cabrera.

I wouldn't be shocked to see SF in the post-season and winning the NL again. When you have 2 studs and 2 more solid starting pitchers, plus a world class closer. you have a shot.

Philfan1.....aka......mental degenerate on the Giants blog. Theriot and Freese are the reasons the Cards won the WS...but then again philfan1 was institutionalized when Carperter sent the dysfunctional Phils home in the NLDS. Philfan1.....go hide in your hovel. Theriot, welcome to SF.

The Giants will take all the offense they can get. Another year of stellar pitching and small ball play. Hoepfully they can be on the receiving end of the majority of those one-run games.

.321 is a good on base percentage?  The problem with Theriot is that he forgot what he used to do to get him to the majors.  I remember watching him at Wrigley when he first came up.  The count was 0-2, and he fouled off about 8 pitches in between balls and drew a walk.  Then when he got the job, he thought he was a hitter, and started swinging at the first pitch.  Glad he's gone, his head needs to shrink a little.

I wish The Red Sox signed him instead of Punto.  Such a cheap price to pay for a guy that will hit 275-280 with a good on base percentage and will knock in 45-50 RBI's for The Giants.  Great signing for The Giants at a very reasonable price!

Philsfan1 don't kid yourself. We all know the Phillies are a World Series Lock for 2012. They are going for their 5th consecutive world title! Seriously though, who can beat the unbeatable Phillies?

Chicago misses the Riot........

Enjoy San Fran, you just got a great guy, a gritty, selfless player who does his job the right way. We miss him in Chicago but with the youth movement happening we all understand. He's very underrated at the plate and always put the ball in play-enjoy Giants!
