Report: Uehara blocks potential trade to Toronto

Evidently relief pitcher Koji Uehara isn't a fan of Toronto. The Rangers had agreed to trade the right-hander to the Blue Jays, but Uehara invoked his no-trade clause and rejected the deal, according to ESPN Dallas. This wasn't a full no-trade clause, either. Uehara reportedly has a list of just six teams with which he could reject a trade, and the Blue Jays happened to be one of those six.

This means, at least for now, Uehara will remain in the Rangers' bullpen. For what it's worth, a report from Japan said that Uehara didn't want to move his family from Baltimore to Toronto. Of course, he plays in Arlington, Texas, now, so that doesn't seem to make a ton of sense. But it's certainly his right to reject the trade.

Uehara, 36, was having a great season in Baltimore before being traded to Texas last season. He had a 1.72 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 62 strikeouts in 47 innings for the Orioles. For the Rangers, though, he had a 4.00 ERA and ended up pitching his way off the World Series roster. Much of his decline could be traced to him stranding an absurd 97.6 percent of baserunners with the Orioles, so it was only natural more of those runners would start crossing the plate. Still, he did pitch worse for the Rangers.

Uehara remains in a crowded bullpen. The Rangers have Joe Nathan as closer and Mike Adams as the setup man. Alexi Ogando and Scott Feldman also figure to have more prominent roles than Uehara.

That's ok Kojii. We didn't want you in Toronto anyway. I was at a game against the o's in June of 2011 and a fan with an o's jersey yelled for Kojii, who ignored him for about 10 minutes. He finally dropped his head and bounded off towards the right field line to sign the guy's jersey. So he struck me as kind of annoyed by the fan which didn't leave a good impression on me. If I were kojii I would have been impressed that somebody in Toronto wanted my autograph. Keep him in Texas.

The reason for invoking his No-Trade Clause could simply mean he thinks Texas gives him a better chance to win.He put up some phenominal numbers with Baltimore last season & in my opinion he'll be hard pressed to repeat that performance.

Report: Uehara blocks potential trade to Toronto

I believe he is waiting for the Orioles to pull the string on a deal to get him back to Baltimore where he family resides. There were rumors that the Orioles did want him back and that he wanted to return. He seemed to enjoy it there for whatever reason and pitched very well for the O's last year. The O's are also loading up on asian players which could make his reunion with the O's even more attractive for him. Don't take it personal Toronto fans, I think he was comfortable in Baltimore and wants to return there.

Report: Uehara blocks potential trade to Toronto

I'm a Jays fan, and I don't necessarily blame Uehara for blocking this trade. He isn't exactly a spring chicken and the Rangers are likely to return to the playoffs this year, and sadly, the Jays are far less likely to get to the dance. Still, that's kinda rough that the Jays are among the 6 teams he had listed. There is always the Canada issue, but should be less of an issue for a guy like Uehara.
