Report: Blue Jays sign Francisco Cordero

By Matt Snyder

The Blue Jays have signed free agent reliever Francisco Cordero to a one-year, $4.5 million contract, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Cordero appeared to be the last remaining closer on the market, but apparently he wasn't even considered that. The Blue Jays will use Sergio Santos -- who they acquired from the White Sox during the Winter Meetings -- as the closer while Cordero will set up, Rosenthal reports.

Cordero, 36, had 37 saves in 43 chances with a 2.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings last season for the Reds. With 327 career saves, only the great Mariano Rivera has more among active pitchers.

Still, the report states Santos is the Blue Jays' man. He's only 28 and got his first closing gig last season for the White Sox. He converted 30 of 36 save chances with a 3.55 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and an astounding 92 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings.

If nothing else, Cordero provides insurance for Santos and gives the Jays' an excellent 8th-9th inning combo. Don't underestimate the upgrade from the likes of Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch, either, as the Blue Jays tied the Angels with an AL-worst 25 blown saves last season. They finished 81-81 and 10 games behind the wild-card winning Rays.

As a Reds fan.......you guys NEVER should of signed him !!!! Im soooo glad hes gone, he never retires an inning 1,2,3, he ALWAYS gives up a run or two, a few hits or walks, hes old he only has two pitches left !!!!! I was a nervous wreck everytime he came in... im estatic hes gone and we got Madson !!!!!

I agree with you jays4life....especially since he was told he may not close for Toronto. Not a bad 8th inning guy....with that in mind not a great deal for Cordero because he won't log save stats and he will be a year older.

Your telling me no one wanted thsis guy and we end up with him for a paltry 4.5 million????  what are the other teams smoking??  AA has done this deal for the draft pick as per his agenda, and the Jays will definitely benefit cause if the Jays are out of contention teams will probably be clamouring for Cordero then so he has trade value, and then at the end of the year he walks, perfect!  Santos and Cordero is a HUGE upgrade over Francisco and Rauch, cant wait for the season to start, come on AA, get us another starter, and were laughing!

I like this move a lot for the Jays. Last season, our bullpen was pathetic and was definetely one of our biggest weaknesses. AA definetely addressed that issue this offseason and, on paper atleast, they should have a much better Bullpen.

The other major problems last season was Jo-Jo Reyes and 3 quarters of a season of crappy play at 3rd. Jo-Jo is gone now, so the team improves by that, and we will have a full season of Lawrie at 3rd. Hopefully EE will find his bat early on at DH, but im worried because he never really heats up til summer gets here. There are a lot of questions from the pitching staff but I think we have decent options to fill out the rotation.

I think the Jays will be much better this season and will probably contend for that 5th WC if it comes. I wouldnt be surprised if the Jays make some big moves come the Trade Deadline...

Not since the years of Tom Henke and Duane Ward has the bullpen been one of their biggest strengths.  Now, what about the starting rotation?

I don't think I've ever seen a bullpen with 4 closers...Jays pen looks stacked.

Great move by AA. Should be a much better bullpen this year for the Jays.
