Bud Selig gets two-year contract extension

Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has received a two-year contract extension to remain in his current role.

Selig had previously said himself he would retire when his current contract expired -- which was set to be at the end of the 2012 season -- but evidently he's had a change of heart. This has happened at least twice before, when Selig said he would retire and ended up sticking around.

"I am very humbled by the request to stay on, and I look forward to building on the great momentum our game has seen in recent years," Selig said in a statement.

Allen H. "Bud" Selig, 77, took over as acting commissioner in 1992 and was then named full-time commissioner in 1998. He had previously been owner and team president of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Under Selig's watch, Major League Baseball has undergone significant changes. The wild card and newly realigned divisions came first.

Also, four expansion teams were introduced, interleague play was introduced, stiff penalties for performance-enhancing drug use have been implemented and limited use of instant replay is now used. Selig also started the World Baseball Classic and, of course, decided to award home-field advantage in the World Series to the league that wins the All-Star Game.

Moving forward, there are also further changes to the playoffs and the Astros will be moved to the American League.

Selig seems to be a rather polarizing figure among fans, so he'll continue to be that lightning rod for at least another two years. And at this point, it almost seems as though he'll be doing so for the rest of his life.

Bud Selig gets two-year contract extension

I suppose my problem with Selig is that he simply is an old man.
Selig isn't going to keep up with a sport that has very serious problems with image. It's been worse, to be sure, and the fact that they have a CBA in place will make that less of a problem.

But Selig is being led around by international marketing of the sport, which is where the big bucks are.
Selig never did address the game's most serious problem -- PEDs. And it's clear he never will.
He could have at least made a statement for or against the designated hitter. How difficult was that, Bud?
As I say, he's too old to notice.
Isn't MLB the only sports orginization that tests for PED's (including HGH)?

Doesn't age equate to experience in a case like this?

I have to say I think all things taken in he's done a good job.  I'd like to see him implement end of game replay and make the damn all-star game a showcase again...  let's let the teams record decide home field advantage in the WS.

Bud Selig gets two-year contract extension

It is a sad day in Major League Baseball...  This would have been a real chance to have someone with integrity such as the late Bart Giamatti to become the new Commissioner of MLB.  While I am not sure whom I would have nominated, I do know that MLB would be much better off without Bud Selig as the Commissioner.  Sad day indeed...

I suppose we need to be careful what we wish for, but we always should remember that the commissioner works for the owners and the owners are in it for the profit.

I have to say this is extremely disappointing to hear.  Ever since the owners disbanded the Commissioners position and then restructured it to put one of their own in power, baseball has suffered in my eyes.  Without a strong handed commissioner who has ultimate power, both the owners and players have been out of control.  And now he has 2 more years to screw up the game even more, starting with moving a native National League team to the American league, leaving his favored Brewers to stay in the NL.  Sad.
