Dontrelle Willis signs with Phillies

By Matt Snyder

The once-relevant Dontrelle Willis has gotten another shot -- this time on a team with a great pitching staff. The 29-year-old left-hander has signed with the Phillies, CBSSports.com Jon Heyman is reporting. The signing is pending a physical.

Willis won the NL Rookie of the Year in 2003 and was the runner-up in Cy Young voting in 2005, but he regressed in 2006, fell apart in 2007 and hasn't been able to do much of anything since. He was even demoted all the way to Class A at one point. Last season, he started 13 games for the Reds, going 1-6 with a 5.00 ERA and 1.52 WHIP.

With the Big Three, Vance Worley, Joe Blanton and Kyle Kendrick in Philly, don't expect the artist formerly known as D-Train to see the rotation anytime soon.

"We still need Rollins signed, Oswalt signed, a temporary or permanent replacement for Howard, a left fielder, and a right fielder to step up.? what talent? it's scattered. Pitching's great, but only goes so far."

The phillies are not going to sign oswalt.....

If Dontrelle can get out of his own way, he could regain his previous form.  Clearly he is a head case, but if that gets resolved, who knows.  Philly is a good place for him, they are expecting nothing and hoping for some glimpse of greatness.  Maybe being behind other winners and having no pressure is just what he needs to get on track.

What are you talking about 1stBallotHoF? It says your a Phillies fan but from your evaluation, one wouldn't know it. I agree that the Phillies need some work but this is a team that won 102 games and lost the last three years to the World Champs(NYY, SF, STL). Yes, we have to sign Rollins/SS and thats about all I agree with you on. Why do we need a Right fielder? Hunter Pence is signed for a couple more years(.314-22-97 last year wasn't way above his career .292-22.5-82) He had 91 RBI's in '10 and 97 in '11 his average is a little lower because of where he batted early in his young career.  I doubt Oswalt will be back and not at the price we paid him nor anywhere close to that amount. Howard will not be replaced and his temporary replacement is already on the team(Mayberry). Mayberry earned the right for extra at bats with his performance last season. He will play 1st and LF. My guess is he'll play 1st and split time in left giving Thome an occasional start at 1b. I think we need a power right handed bat, if Mayberry continues to get better than we already have it. It would be nice to make a trade/get David Wright at 3rd but that is being greedy. This team has enough, it needs to stay healthy but that comes with aged veterans and a changed approach to hitting. Shane Victorino & Jimmy Rollins for small guys, you can hit HR's but we need you to hit for average and get on base. I don't need to see 16-18hr from you guys, the Phils need you to hit 30 points higher(GET on BASE) and for Polanco to stay healthy all season.

Now for our SS issues: We have to sign Rollins because he is the best available but I would have preferred Jose Reyes. I know he has been injured a lot but Rollins has missed his share of games(DL stints) the last couple of years. Reyes is younger, faster, hits for a higher average and is a true lead-off hitter, which we desperately need. If Rollins is the heart beat of this team, than it's no wonder why this team is a bunch of free swingers in love with the homers. They needed a face to change that mentality and now it's too late. Lead off hitters need to take some walks or lay down a bunt, whatever it takes to set the table,  Rollins is no longer that guy. Both have missed time(lots) the last few years: Reyes played 36 games('09) and missed a total of 65 games ('10-'11) while Rollins played 88 games in ('10) and missed a total of 45 games in ('08 & '11). I would have loved to get a little younger and a changed approach from a real lead-off hitter.

I agree, HoF: Willis can throw to the occasional lefty batter, maybe do some cleaning up. But the Phils need to revamp the bats--fewer strikeouts, more walks, more primetime clutch play.  The Phils are minus a sure left fielder and a starting first baseman (coming off his first serious injury).  They return an older, injury prone second baseman and third baseman.  They're likely to re-sign their fading shortstop--solid, but not great and definitely not a legit leadoff hitter.  And Heaven forbid any of the big three arms takes a significant injury. So, Willis?  No big deal. Nix?  Nice addition, but another lefty. Cuddyer?  Apparently too expensive and replaced by Wiggington, a reliable but middling utility player. In all, Amaro's a hustler, but the bats are no better, possibly worse, and keeping the same admirable group may have no payoff in the end.  The last two years tell us that this off season hasn't really solved Philly's problem--yet.

Do you have any clue whatsover?  Willis is going to be the next Scott Eyre, get a lefty out then go to the shower.  The Phils have been notoriously good at taking other teams scraps and turning them into productive players in the right situations.  JC Romero was released by Boston, Chad Durbin was useless in Detroit, Brad Lidge was a basket-case in Houston plus Chan Ho Park, and Jose Contreras also came from nowhere to be very useful for the Phils after being discarded.
Papelbon, are you serious?  He has been one of the top five closers in baseball's toughest division for at least five years and you are complaining?  Madson had one good year as closer and it was definitely time to part ways with Lidge.  Get a clue.
As far as the window is shut, that is another joke.  The Phils if healthy and sign Jimmy Rollins are probably the most talented team in baseball.  The Giants won a title with three good pitchers a good pen and a hot hitter, no reason the Phils can't do the same.
Six division titles in a row is coming which is almost unprecedented(other than the Braves and i believe the Yanks).  The Series is a very achievable goal!!!

I don't understand why teams keep wasting their time with WILLIS.
He is done.
That injury messed him up bad and he has not been the same since.

Lefties hit .127 against him. He's going to be a one out pitcher against left handed hitters, plus he's a very good pinch hitter( .387 last year)
