DALLAS -- The New York Mets have sent outfielder Angel Pagan along with either a player to be named later or cash to the San Francisco Giants for outfielder Andres Torres and relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez, the Giants announced Wednesday.

The Giants desperately need an offensive boost, yet don't really have any available money to sign free agents or take on expensive contracts via trade. Pagan, 30, doesn't exactly scream offensive powerhouse, but he had a better 2011 than Torres. Pagan hit .262/.322/.372 with seven homers, 56 RBI and 32 stolen bases last season for the Mets. He was a quality offensive player in 2009-10, though.

MLB Winter Meetings
Torres, 33, was a major piece of the puzzle for the Giants when they won the World Series in 2010, but he was bad in 2011. He hit .221/.312/.330 with four homers and 19 steals in 398 plate appearances.

Ramirez, 30, had a 2.62 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 68 2/3 innings last season. He definitely bolsters the back-end of the Mets' bullpen, where they also added Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco Tuesday. Bobby Parnell joins Ramirez and likely Rauch in setting up for Francisco.

Report: Mets, Giants agree to trade

sandy alderson whats going on? why are you picking up retread players instead of prospects. the mets are going to win less than 70 games, save every penny and play the kids from the farm systems. this season coming up is a bust, if you take a chance with the kids you might get another david wright or dwight gooden. please stop trading for guys like torres or signing rauch what good is a closer if you never get to the 8th inning needing one. last year if you traded reyes to the giants you could have gotten some good prospects. keep trading and signing these kind of players and the mets will never draw and never get out of the cellar. very disappointed.

Report: Mets, Giants agree to trade

***BREAKING NEWS***

The Los Angeles Angels have pulled off a massive 3-way trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins.  The exact details of the trade are not clear yet, but the key players involved are Albert Pujols, Hanley Rameriz, Kendry Morales, and Vernon Wells, with Pujols and Hanley Rameriz going to the Angels for a handful of players and also cash considerations  The St. Louis Cardinals who were able to offer Albert Pujols the best contract available to him as far as money and total years goes will sign and trade away Pujols for players from both the Angels and the Marlins.  After signing Pujols, the Cardinals will then trade him to the Angels who will in turn send a combination of players to both the Cardinals and the Miami Marlins.  The Miami Marlins will then send Hanley Rameriz to the Angels.  The following players from the Angles will be going to either the Cardinals or the Marlins, Los Angeles Angel Kendry Morales, Vernon Wells, Alberto Callaspo, Jerome Williams, Fernando Rodney, and either Erik Aybar or Maicer Izturis will be going to either the Cardinals or the Marlins.   It is not clear what players from the Cardinals and the Marlins will also be involved in the trade, but Jon Jay of the Cardinals and Gaby Sanchez of the Marlins have been possible names mentioned.

Look for more detailed information on this trade to be available in the next couple of days.

Report: Mets, Giants agree to trade

If the Mets felt they had to trade Pagan--perhaps for contract reasons--then at least get a prospect and Ramirez.  Torres makes little sense to me given that it'll be a couple of years before the Mets are in a position to compete.  By then, he probably won't even be on the team.

Report: Mets, Giants agree to trade

This trade makes the David DeJesus trade seem like a good deal and DeJesus was absolutely terrible with Oakland.

Report: Mets, Giants agree to trade

Gotta agree on this one that the Mets have lost two leadoff men in Pagan and Reyes. I guess they'll sign a speedy infield guy to leadoff because no one on the team now is a good leadoff man.

Report: Mets, Giants agree to trade

Gotta wonder who the Mets expect to be their leadoff hitter next year.  Pagan may not have had a good year last year, but he showed enough in the previous two years to serve in the spot at least temporarily.  Torres is older and had a dreadful year last year, so who knows how much he has to offer.

Ramirez does bolster the bullpen, which was extremely pedestrian last year, but I don't think the additions of Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco do much to strengthen the closer position.  They're both short contracts, which is good, but those signings say to me that the team is trying to cobble together a bullpen on the cheap.  They also point to the apparent absence of any decent pitching prospects in the upper levels of the farm system.  Which means it will probably be another year of pitching mediocrity in Flushing.
