Catcher Taylor Teagarden has been traded to the Baltimore Orioles, the Rangers announced Thursday afternoon. In return, the Rangers will get minor-league pitcher Randy Henry and a player to be named later. The deal marks the first trade by new general manager Dan Duquette.

Teagarden, 27, was once touted as a good prospect but has seen his playing time dwindle over the past few years and hasn't hit very well in his limited chances. He has a career line of .220/.286/.417 with 16 home runs and 21 doubles in 392 major-league plate appearances. So he does have some power. He's also struck out 142 times and makes tons of outs.

With Matt Wieters firmly entrenched behind the plate, expect Teagarden to be the No. 2 catcher and get maybe a start or two per week at most.

Henry, 21, had a 2.22 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 29 appearances this past season with stops in both Low-A and High-A ball.

If you think Weiters is a good defensive catcher, then you are either nuts or living in a very small world.  Weiters is a 1B/OF pretending to be a catcher.  He wasn't very good defensively at college and hasn't improved enough to be labeled average in the pros.  He can hit though (and pitched pretty well in college).

The O's are not moving Weiters from behind the plate. He is an all star caliber catcher defensively and will soon be offensively.

I have to agree about Matt Wieters. But I do not see him playing in the outfield because of lack of speed. Depending on what they do with Mark Reynolds I can see Wieters playing first base some. He did get a start there this past season and the few plays he handled were routine so no problems. If Taylor Teagarden can hit any then I would see Wieters at 1B or DH more often.

21 year old in Low/High A ball.  Now that's a real journeyman.

how many C's did the Rangers have that did not pan out....salty, teabag, max ramirez  all were labelled top prospects...only salty (brave) has begun to capture improvement

I see the team moving Weiters out from behind the mask to improve longevity and improve stamina throughout the season.  Teagarden is a better catcher anyway...defensively.  Weiters could play 1B, DH or, with a little practice RF or LF.  Full time catchers take too much pounding from foul balls, squating and rising 250+ times a night, etc, to ever fulfill their hitting potential.  I like Teagarden, always have, and think the Rangers nevery gave him the chance he deserved...mostly thanks to a subpar Saltalamachia taking up time.  Of course now Salty is playing fairly well, but had Teagarden gotten all that time, I daresay he would be performing even better.

If my Reds weren't already loaded at catching (prospect wise), I would have wanted them to pry away Teagarden for a journeyman propsect like Baltimore did.
