David DeJesusBy C. Trent Rosecrans

The Theo Epstein era in Chicago is starting with David DeJesus, as the team announced it signed the free-agent outfielder to a two-year deal worth $10 million with a team option for 2014. There is thought, though, this move could be a precursor to a bigger move, perhaps a trade of Alfonso Soriano.

DeJesus, who will be 32 in December, has played all three outfield spots, but is primarily a corner outfielder. He hit .240/.323/.376 with 10 home runs for the Athletics in 2011, but is a .284/.356/.421 career hitter. For now, DeJesus will be penciled in as the team's everyday right fielder.

The left-handed hitting DeJesus will benefit from moving from the spacious park in Oakland to the more hitter-friendly Wrigley Field. Last year was his only year in Oakland after spending the first eight years of his career in Kansas City.

As for a trade, the Cubs would love to get rid of Soriano, but nearly any deal would require them to eat much of Soriano's massive salary -- and it's one that would make Adam Richmond blush. The Cubs still owe Soriano $54 million through 2014. If they are able to get rid of him, that would open up a spot for Tyler Colvin or prospect Brett Jackson.

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

dont you worry about the phillies they will be doing something. rumors coming around now that their were talks with jose reyes' agent.....aramis ramirez??? yeah lets sign him for 3/45 like hes trying to get and some will give hmi..hahaha yeah right thats a dumb move. 2/24 would be fine but anymore then 12 a year for a guy that gets hurt and is a cancer in the locker room isnt workth what hes gonna get. secondly cuddyer and the phillies talked and hes looking for too much. so they went and got a guy that plaays almost as many positions and will fill in all around the field just like cuddy. that to me looks like they are setting up for a big splash. signing cuddy and ramirez would be around 26-28 mill a yr combined for both of them and the phillies dont wanna spend that kinda of money on old guys who arent sure things. yeah lets play a utility man(cuddyer) albeit a good one that plays much more then most utilty men, 10 mill a yr......hahaha yeah right. phillies will sign reyes or trade for david wright. just wait and see.

but thee reason i wanted them to sign dejesus is cause he comes cheap(4.5 being very cheap for a career .285 hitter with spped and good defense). signing cheap guys like that keeps hte payroll down for them to make a big splash and thats exactly why i think they traded for wiggington instead of going 3/30-36 for cuddy(NO WAY!).

also i think the phillies didnt sign dejesus cause they thought they could have the same guy in scott posednik, who they just signed to a minor league contract with and invite to spring trainging, and he comes much cheaper. maybe not even a million. thats anther cheap deal, where they save money. all coming back to what i already said twice, probably to make a BIG SPLASH!!!!

hanley ramirez, jose reyes, or david wright will be a phillie before spring training!!!!! i know its not a definite but thats what im starting to think after they backed away from cuddy and went and got a practically same guy for only 2 million this year.

GO PHILLIES!!!! and Good luck to the cubs this year. i like your dejesus signing, even though most of you's and your haters dont....

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

Your Phillies dont seem to want to spend money so far. They should of already signed Aramis Ramirez to play third Picked up Michael Cuddyer to play all over and shipped Trever May to Cincy for Billy Hamilton to play ss hell should of picked up Jason Kubel instead of Wiggington If your Phillies did what I just proposed your team is solid The Cubs picking up David was just waising the owners money that should have been spent on real needs of the team   A Yankee for life fan Jim in Deptford

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

Prossi24, just read some of the comments in this thread, and see if I made it up. I won't name names, but someone praised Theo and said GO CUBBIES, and another guy called DeJesus a stud and will hit .280 etc.

Plus I did NOT say Cub fans are going to make a huge deal of this. What I said was that it bugs me that Cub fans DO make a big deal of this before the guy has had one at bat. I stand by that; if he plays well then Theo can be elected governor. In the meantime, I would suggest that YOU not make things up.

And while I am here, I want to point out that Jemile Weeks hit .303 with an OBP of .340 in his rookie year with Oakland. (I know, who is Jemile Weeks?). So it isn't true when someone said everyone who hits in Oakland for the first time has problems.

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

syeely: What Cub fans are ready to elect Epstein governor for this move?  It's just a small piece, where do you even get that statement from that Cubs fans are going to make a huge deal out of this?  Seems like you just made it up

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

Depending on the size of the 2 year deal I would not assume that he would be blocking Colvin.  He seems like a 4th outfielder who will start in right if needed.I do agree that they need to give Colvin more of a look.  He had a monster rookie season and Quade didn't seem to give him much of a shake.

Mike C,  Have you seen Tyler Colvin play?  He had a decent 2010 season as a rookie not a monster season. He hit .254 20 HR 56 RBI's struck out 100 times in 358 ab's and had a on base of.316. He did nothing in 2011.  He is a average to below defender in right field and David DeJesus can play defense.  The Cubs were the worst denfensive team in the NL last year.  DeJesus just improved the teams defense. Good move by the Cubs. Colvin can be the 4th outfielder at best. He is 26 not 22 and should have made strides in 2011.  He did not.  Don't blame Quade for that one.  Might be the only thing you can't blame Mike Quade for last season.

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

all you people saying this is a bad sign are idiot. 4.5 a yr for 2 yrs for a guy thats had one bad year?? and that one bad year was in oakand where EVERY hitter goes down the tubes. especially in that ugly, hige ballpark and that peice of crap lineup. i was hoping the phillies would sign this guy and let hijm platoon with mayberry. then trade brown. but now thats out of the question. good first sign by theo. maybe the phillies will go get kubel now. or maybe they are setting up for something huge?? like a wright to the phillies or hanley?? or maybe even stealing reyes from the "miami marlins". lol.........

jimmy wont be back thats all i know so we have money to spend. i was juts hoping the philllies would take a shot on dejesus cause for this money he has major upside that could very well be a steal....

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

A couple things . First of all this is Jed Hoyers move not Theo. He wanted this guy when he was in San Diego. Second,  its not a terrible move . Last year was an awful year for him . But he is a .284 lifetime hitter with a career obp of over .350  and that the main stat that this new regime looks at. Decent speed . Good defense . Doesnt hurt at all and maybe he will bounce back towrds his career numbers

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

Your comment should be said about every deal made, look what happened when the Sox signed your outfielder last year and everybody thought they finally had a power hitter last year in Dunn, and then all of the sudden they wated him out of town, so to say Cub fans should wait and see should apply to all trades...
