Red Sox to name Bobby Valentine manager

By Matt Snyder

Bobby Valentine will be named the next manager of the Boston Red Sox at a 5:30 p.m. news conference on Thursday, capping off one of the weirdest managerial searches in recent memory.

First, the Red Sox were going to hire someone from their first wave of interviews. Then the Cubs hired Dale Sveum and all of a sudden the Red Sox went back and started over, expanding their search. Then we heard reports that a manager would be named Tuesday, only to find out that would be delayed until later in the week. Tuesday, the saga took another turn.

Karl Ravech of ESPN -- the studio host of Baseball Tonight, not a reporter, mind you -- tweeted that Gene Lamont had been eliminated from contention for the manager job. That would leave only Valentine as a candidate, so the logical conclusion was that he would be hired. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe then reported that Valentine is the choice over Lamont "but that could change."

Lamont hadn't been notified of anything, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. And Alex Speier of WEEI.com had a team source that says reports indicating Lamont is out were "not true." And Cafardo noted there hadn't been any contract negotiations between Valentine and the Red Sox.

Then came the report from ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes that Valentine will be hired (later confirmed by Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman and the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham, before the AP's report).

Valentine to Red Sox
The AP report says the two sides are working on finishing the deal, but Valentine is currently in Japan, though other reports note he's due back on Wednesday.

Valentine, 61, managed the Rangers for parts of eight seasons and then the Mets for parts of seven seasons. He won two NL wild cards and one NL pennant with the Mets and has 1,117 wins against 1,072 losses in his managerial career. Valentine also served as a manager in Japan for several years and is currently a baseball analyst for ESPN -- a position he'll obviously leave to take the Red Sox job.

Valentine has a huge contingent of fans who seem to hate him while others love him. He once wore a "disguise" (a fake mustache) in the dugout after being ejected from a game and has always been rather boisterous. Now he'll be the head of one of the most polarizing teams in baseball that is coming off an epic collapse followed by a nightmare of an early offseason.

Basically, if nothing else, this is going to be entertaining.

Red Sox to name Bobby Valentine manager

Yep - and the Sox made baseball history again in September - reminiscent of the '64 Phillies and '51 Dodgers.  Like I said - wait another 20 championships or so to talk about us "eight year olds".  Sorry that you think one needs a dictionary to respond as I did - though I'm not suprised.  Ignorance is bliss.

I would like to humbly apologize for my words about Yankee fans in general.  Peoplewillcome has shown me that Yankee fans have made much improvements over the years.
1.  By using the word "booby" and "sux", this has shown me that Yankee fans have the intellect of an eight year old, not a four year old as previously thought.
2.  Yankee fans know where to find a dictionary if needed and use it to find big words.  Previously they thought Merriam Webster was a top-rated pitching prospect from the Bronx.
3.  This Yankee fan proved he can count to 3, showing that there's hope for all Yankee fans to eventually reach the number 4, which happens to be the amount of games the Yankees lost in a row in the AL Championship series in 2004, making Major League Baseball history.

And as for all of the Yankee fans, in their monosyllabic rants, who are chortling about how bad the Red Sox are going to be this year, you should probably be worrying about your own team.
Really?

Item 1:  Couldn't care less about Booby V or Red Sux
Item 2:  I would suggest that *You* worry less about pretensions of linguistic superiority and more about *your team*
Item 3:  And as a non-paleoanthropic Yankees fan, I would further suggest you forcefully immerse a large, (mostly) cylindrical, inanimate object up the orifice originating at the lower extremity of your spinal cord (Translation, as I'm sure you'll need it: Shove a Louisville Slugger up your a$$)

I hate sinking to your level (ain't my usual cup of tea); had a bad day at the office.  I'll be better tomorrow; you'll still be an envious green monster, pitifully prone to megalomanical, yet inconsequential taunts.  One last suggestion: wait another 20 championships or so before maintaining this posture.

I really lost interest in BB a long time ago. It is boring.
But, things like this can make it interesting. Bobby V is a good manager and will make the Red Sox current again.
He knows his stuff. Good - no - great decision by management.

Happy dance soxgob, that is what we are doing, happy dance. No worries about our own team, just enjoying the moment. To see how far the mighty Boston Red Sox fan has been reduced in less than one year. In just 10 months, you went from wondering how long the dynasty would last to Bobby Valentine. Yes happy dance :-)

tired of people criticizing bobby v 'cuz " he never won"..that only matters if you had a team that SHOULD have won, and he never did..texas never had pitching and the mets team he took to the world series was god-awful..francona only won cuz he inherited an all star team and he still screwed it up most years...I would remind franCOMA worshipers where their guy finished with a mediocre philly team and a less than 200 mill payroll

I've been saying francona was a moron since the day he was hired, and still stand by it..way overrated bumbling idiot whose team won in spite of him and whose rep grew by kissing ass to the boston media...going to be nice to have a manager who actually puts the best players on the field instead of the .190 darmell mcd's of the world..good riddance francoma..go to espn with all of the other overrrated wonders
