The Pirates have signed free agent shortstop Clint Barmes to a two-year, $10.5 million contract, multiple outlets are reporting.

“In talking with my agent and talking with the club, they were wanting to make a decision and they wanted to know by pretty much yesterday who their shortstop was going to be so they could continue to move on,” Barmes said ( “It was one of those things they had a few others guys lined up behind me, and the way it was explained to me I was the first in line as far as who they wanted. They threw a great offer.”

The Pirates had previously declined to pick up the option for incumbent shortstop Ronny Cedeno.

Barmes, 32, is a very good defensive shortstop who hit .244/.312/.386 with 27 doubles and 12 homers in 123 games last season for the Astros.

And I thought it couldn't get more any exciting than Bobby Crosby... It's almost like while the goal of other teams is to make the playoffs and win the World Series, Pittsburgh's annual goal is to finish north of 60 games. However, I think this gives them the chance to make it consecutive 70 win seasons for the first time since '03-'04 so there is reason for optimism.

Again how old is he again - 32 y/o, one thing the Pirates should get are players who can move the players on the diamond. I guess the Pirates just make do with pedestrian signings nothing to really help them win games. But i do agree with not signing Cedeno he sure did not do much and more likely their current signed player will do the same for them.
