Report: Pirates 'close' to signing Clint Barmes

Posted on: November 19, 2011 2:47 pm

Clint BarmesBy C. Trent Rosecrans

The Pirates are "close" to signing shortstop Clint Barmes, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com tweets.

Earlier in the day Rosenthal tweeted the Pirates were the leader for the former Rockies and Astros shortstop, saying a two-year deal was likely.

The Pirates declined a $3-million option on Ronny Cedeno. Cedeno, 28, hit .249/.297/.339 last season and was a finalist for the Gold Glove.

Barmes will be 33 in March and hit just .244/.312/.386 last season and is a career .252 hitter, but a very good defensive shortstop. Barmes made $3.93 million in 2011.

The Giants and Brewers were also interested in Barmes, who was tread to the Astros last November.

Ugh...same old suck fest Pirates. Sure Ronny Cedeno isn`t worth $3,000,000, but 33yr old Barmes just isn`t worth adding. Might as well bring powerless Jack Wilson back.

How many butts are in the seats at Pirate games ?

Similar to my Reds, a lot of people that don't spend a dime sure do whine a lot about buying low dollar rosters...fans have some stake in who the team can sign, too. Just saying...Don't give up- buy a seat, go to the park and boo if it's bad.

Granted, the Pirates have been "rebuilding" for a long time...and after a couple of decades, it looks like the revenue sharing check isn't being reinvested in the team...unless they are courting Caribbean talent on that Pirates Yacht they bought...

Ownership has to be dedicated to being competitive, but it doesn't mean they have to sign Albert Pujols to do that. The Pirates can (and need to) improve the farm. Clint Hurdle is a good baseball man. The Pirates have some talent. The secret to winning in a small market is in how well you grow your own talent, and how you market it to your fans.

The Reds don't draw that well even yet when they win-and have a manager that can't score 2 runs without a 3 run homer, but they have a GM and ownership that appears to scout and draft pretty well. It's a constant work in progress for small teams.

Thats what happens when Cam Bonify and Dave Littlefield sign nothing but Pitchers in the Draftes to be number 5 starters. you get no short stops in ur system.  What about that, its almost imposible to sign nothing but Pitchers the last 12 years and not get lucky. They are great, it is safe to say that someone that knows nothing about baseball, could have picked up a scout MLB magazine and have done better.  That is the truth.  It is like the finacial crises, we have people like Barney Frank, and CEO's coming on and saying it is great and the next day it went belly up.  The Pirates just send the same message and the West Virginia owner sits back and says it is ok, were trying.  Right.  Ok.

Wow, break up the Pirates.  First Barajas now Barmes, look out NL central the Pirates are bringing in the garbage.  10 million, which I'm sure is most of their free agent budget, on those two players...wow.  Far better to sign one good player for 10 or 12 million or wait for better bargins to come along. 5.5 million for Barmes?  Seriously?  Who in the world was going to pay him even 3?  Pirates GM has to be getting kickbacks...has to.

He'd be a good signing for the Buccos.  Just be sure to put a clause in the contract that prevents him from carrying any deer meat up stairwells.
