Grady Sizemore

By C. Trent Rosecrans

The Indians turned down their $9 million option on outfielder Grady Sizemore, the two sides are reportedly "close" to a new, one-year deal, FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.

Rosenthal said the talks were "serious" with one source saying it was "70-30" and another source said it was "very likely." Rosenthal reports the deal will be for less guaranteed money than his previous deal, but incentives could make it close to the $9 million he could have made in 2012.

"The Indians have come at us with an aggressive offer," Sizemore's agent, Joe Urbon, told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. Urbon added the two sides have "exchanged proposals."

Sizemore has been limited to just 104 games over the last two seasons with serious knee injuries, undergoing surgery on his right knee on Monday. It was his fourth operation in the past two years, including micro fracture surgery on his left knee in 2010.

Sizemore, 29, hit .224/.285/.422 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI in 71 games in 2011. He won two Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger while appearing in three All-Star Games from 2006-08.

In addition to the Indians, the Cubs, Rangers, Giants, Yankees, Phillies, Rockies and Red Sox had reportedly had interest in signing Sizemore.

Geez, really?  This guy has been a real bum! But who else are we gonna get?  If we let him loose, he will probably hit .300, smack 25 dingers, and swipe 30 bags for the 'Sox or the Yankees.  For the money we have no better options.  We should save some of that money and try to extent Choo.  What next, we ink Pronk for three more years?  I didn't know time travel was possible, but the Dolans have transported me back to the mid-eighties!!!  Time to bust out the jean-jacket and rush t-shirts!  I feel my mullet growing back as I type!

Report: Sizemore 'close' to deal with Indians

I sure hope the Tribe is able to sign Grady, but I was surprised to read that he might be able to make $9m next year if he meets all of the incentives in a new contract.  Couldn't the Indians have given him an incentive laden contract in the neighborhood of $6 - $7m and still been able to sign Grady?  Are the Dolans going to the extreme to prove to the fans that they are not cheap after all?  Either way, the Tribe is wise to sign him.  If he performs like the Grady of old, he's worth it... if he doesn't, then they at least don't have to shell out boatloads of money to watch him on the DL for most of the season once again.

It better be an incentive loaded contract based on Grady's last few years. Grady was an All-Star until he hurt his knee and it has been down hill since then. Grady has been sitting at home collecting nice checks from the Tribe and he needs to perform if he wants to get another nice payday.
