Blue Jays reveal familiar 'new' logo, uniforms

Long-time fans of the Toronto Blue Jays will likely be quite excited at the new look of their Jays for the 2012 season -- seen here, modeled by MVP candidate Jose Bautista. Friday, the Blue Jays unveiled this new logo and uniform set, and it's a "modernized" version of the logo/uniforms they had from 1977-1997, meaning it was donned by their two World Series championship ballclubs and the majority of the Blue Jays' greats. Perhaps most importantly for those who love nostalgia, the red maple leaf is back as is the prominence of the color blue and the "aggressive" Blue Jay bird on the cap.

"Updating our original logo, the strong affinity to go back to 'Blue' and returning the red Maple Leaf to the primary mark recognizes the classic look of which we feel baseball logos and uniforms should consist," Blue Jays president Paul Beeston said in a statement. "This new look represents what the Blue Jays mean to our players, staff and most importantly, from the sentiment expressed by our fans.

"The uniforms truly capture the essence of the Blue Jays vision, showing our strong commitment to our country as Canada's only Major League Baseball Club."

It was definitely weird not seeing much "blue" or "jay" (the bird itself) on the uniforms the past several years -- I mean, what if the Cardinals didn't have any actual Cardinals and went more maroon than red? -- and bringing back the maple leaf is a nice touch. They didn't definitely have to use the old logo and uniforms, but if they couldn't come up with what they felt was a better design, there's nothing wrong with going retro.

And if you're so excited to purchase some of the gear, here you go, via a Blue Jays press release:
The new uniforms and new logo merchandise is available starting today at Jays Shop locations exclusively until November 23. Jays Shop at Rogers Centre Gate 5 (416.341.2904) will be open extended hours this weekend from 10am to 9pm. Jays Shop at Sears Yonge & Dundas (416.349.7111 ext. 5103) is open Sears store hours. Fans can also visit www.jaysshop.ca or call 1.877.JaysShop (877.529.7746) to order.

Blue Jays reveal familiar 'new' logo, uniforms

This is awesome.  These are the best uniforms in baseball history in my opinion.  Thank goodness they went back to the classic look, please never change.  The Orioles went back to their classic look too.  By the way, I am an Astros fan, but the Jays always had the best looking unis.

I love the "retro" jerseys of the Blue Jays. It seems as though several teams such as the Blue Jays and Orioles are doing everything as possible to draw back some of their fans back to the stadium in spite of their performances throughout the years. You see the Padres and Marlins trying to spice up their looks in order to draw revenue by coming out with new uniforms. All I want to know is how's next on the list for "retro" uniforms.......the Astros?!!!Cool

They bring back nightmares of Joe Carter and what he did to the Phils in 93! Thanks Jays I thought I was finally getting over that.

I love these uniforms, the logo is great, the double lined numbers and front text looks nice. Im really glad they went back to these uniforms.

With the Blue Jays growing into a real contender(lets see what moves AA makes this offseason), and the addition of another Wildcard, the future looks very, very bright for the Jays.

Also, this uniform might be my favorite in the league, and I know thats a homerish statement but I think its a beautiful thing. Way better then the horrible Marlins uniform...

Good move not bringing back the white-panel front to the hat like the O's "new" uniforms.

Thank goodness. The last logo was simply, simply horrible. This is a classy, simple look. It harkens back to the teams' pinnacle of success and makes the players look professional.
Very clean blue and white and a nice addition of the Maple Leaf.
Now, bring in Votto via trade to add another quality Canadian player!

The home whites are classy.  The blue shirts are still pretty much the same as a slo-pitch softball team from Hamilton would wear. The return of the maple leaf is a plus.

The uniforms look good and I'm glad the Jays went back to more of a classic look. Now, instead of re-branding the uniforms every few years to keep sales up, it would be far greater to see a contending team. I honestly think that has been the driving force behind so many changes over the last 15 years, but if they have a competitive team (as I believe they will), I think you'll see this jersey stick around for a long time.
