Carlos ZambranoBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Carlos Zambrano's Cubs career may not be over quite yet -- new president Theo Epstein told reporters he met with Zambrano and didn't close the door on a return to Wrigley Field for the volatile right-hander.

"We told him we would give him the right to earn his way back to being a Cub, that nothing would be given to him," Epstein told reporters (via the Chicago Tribune) on Monday after meeting with Zambrano, agent Barry Praver and Cubs farm director Oneri Fleita.

"He could earn his way back through very hard work this winter, through rebuilding relationship man-to-man with all his teammates and through other steps we discussed," Epstein said.

Zambrano was suspended by the team after he left during a game in Atlanta on Aug. 12 following an ejection for throwing at Chipper Jones. Epstein described Zambrano as "contrite" in their meeting.

"He expressed a strong desire to be a Cub and an even stronger desire to have a real good 2012 season," Epstein said (via the Chicago Sun-Times). "He's in great shape, working real hard."

Zambrano also encountered controversy in 2010 when he started a fight in the dugout during a game. The 30-year-old is in the final year of a five-year, $91.5 million contract. He went 9-7 with a 4.82 ERA last season and is 125-81 with a 3.60 ERA in his 11 seasons with the Cubs. He is currently playing winter ball in his native Venezuela.

Epstein: Zambrano can earn his way back to Cubs

"Brilliant.. bring him back, and when the Cubs are out of contention.. early August?... then trade him to a contender who will overpay... maybe the Red Sox?  Just 6 months of having to deal with him."

First of all, the Cubs will be out of contention in late April. Second, this is exactly what was said last year: keep Zambrano until the trade deadline then trade him to the Yankees or Red Sox. How did that work out? Zambrano went crazy and couldn't be traded for a bag of balls.

The only thing that can be done that makes sense is to let Zambrano go because in the long run, no matter how many games he wins, he will still hurt the team in the end. This guy is true addition by subtraction.

I have to agree with you about Bradley.  I really hope Zambrano straightens out because at 30 with that arm it's not too late.

Don't do it Theo. You'll be sorry. This guy is a cancer and always will be. Trade him for whatever you can get. If there are no takers, then cut him. It's better than having the team's chemistry destroyed for another season.

I'd like  to  see the  Cubs  go a different direction.  If  by  some  miracle of  God they  found  themselves in  contention in September, Big Z would  find a way to screw it  up  by  being  his  selfish psychotic self.  Time to move on.

This is all BS to try and bring up his trade value before the season starts.

Because Epstein has the image as being the son of God.  Epstein isn't even a top 5 GM, his move is the more surprising one.
