What's old is new again, as the Twins have fired general manager Bill Smith and named former GM Terry Ryan the interim GM.

Smith, who took over for Ryan in 2007, will be offered another job in the organization, owner Jim Pohlad said in a statement released by the team.

"No one in the Twins' organization wants to win any more than Bill," Pohlad said in the release. "He is unquestionably loyal, committed and talented. The Twins goal is to get better in 2012 and beyond. Bill was equally motivated to achieve that goal but we differed in the scope and approach that was required."

Smith has worked for the Twins since 1986. In four seasons as the team's GM, the team went 332-318 with two AL Central titles. He was the man behind the trade of Johan Santana and J.J. Hardy and also signed Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer to lengthy contract extensions. He also sent Wilson Ramos to Washington for Jon Rauch at the trade deadline 2010, which has come under fire as Mauer's injury concerns have increased.

Ryan, 58, was the team's general manager form 1994-2007.

"As we move ahead, I’m looking forward to the challenge of improving this club for 2012 and beyond," Ryan said in the statement. "We have many assets in place including a strong front office, manager, coaching staff and returning core of players. We have a lot of work to do in relation to development of our roster, but I’m optimistic in our collective abilities to ensure the future on-field success of this franchise."

Ryan, according to the release, "will be responsible for succession planning within the baseball department with the intent to identify future leadership candidates."

"The Pohlad family asked me to come in and take over for Bill as interim GM, is that for one year or ten years, I don't know," Ryan said during the team's news conference with Ryan and president Dave St. Peter at Target Field on Monday.

Ryan also announced that former Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky would also re-join the Twins organization as a "professional scout and assistant to the general manager" -- or "interim" general manager. Krivsky left the Twins to take over the Reds in 2006 before being replaced by Walt Jocketty in 2008. Since then he has worked for the Orioles and Mets.

The Twins payroll was around $113 million last season and Ryan said the team would likely be somehwere around $100 million in 2012.

Twins fire Smith; Ryan back as interim GM

From 1985 - 2007 the Twins had two men at the helm (McPhail & Ryan) that did their jobs and kept this team competitive. You can see this past season the Twins didn't have the usual up and coming players. Maybe after 4 years away from the game Ryan will have renewed energy to getting the Twins back to competing for the Central Division title.

Wishing the Twins all the best, but really sorry to hear someone up there finds value in having Wayne Krivsky roaming the front office again...

Krivsky was the Village Idiot as GM in Cincinnati...He had a nasty tendancy to fire better baseball minds that disagreed with him (MOST better baseball minds disagreed with him), and replace them with old college buddies and yes men...

Obviously, he has worked his usual magic on the Orioles and Mets, and ready to go back home to the Twins, who put up wth him first.

Krivsky was famous in Cincinnati for asking players agents how damaged goods pitchers arm's were, instead of asking for Medical Reports from MLB before signing them- he hosed the Reds twice in one week that way... he traded starting position players two at a time for batting practice quality middle relievers... and released MLB answers to sign rule 5 players to be released later. He did get lucky in the Brandon Phillips for junk trade...and then "crafted" the Josh Hamilton for Edinson Volquez trade debacle.

Of course, Krivsky had some documented talent assessment gaffes in Minnesota too...Boston has thanked Wacko Wayne for giving them Big Papi for a $35K waiver claim...He was finally replaced by Walt Jocketty in Cincnnati, just before he could finalize a trade of two young guys named Joey Votto and Johnny Cueto to Oakland for Joe Blanton.

Wayne Krivsky couldn't find talent at Carnegie Hall, but he's convinced he's always the smartest guy in the room.

Better give him a plane ticket, a Jugs gun and clipboard, and keep him on the road charting upcoming pitchers, and off the phone working deals.

Better move than any FA they could have picked up.  Smith was just not cut out for GM, unfortunately showing that pretty quick after one of the best GMs in baseball set him up nicely for the job.  Ryan never got to play with much money pre-Target Field, now he will and the team should be much better within a year or two. Now he needs to swing that Jim Hoey for Johan deal.

An over priced & often injured Furcal?  Pass.  Cuddyer has priced himself out of the Twins league.  Kubal is worth bringing back, but at a reasonable offer.  I think it would be cool if they made a run at Papelbon. Twins have alot of holes to fill.

I wish he had traded Wilson Ramos to the Nats for Rauch... Unfortunately it was for Matt Capps instead.

Important, also, is the fact that the Twins were able to get Wayne Krivsky back. I believe he had a great deal to do with negotiations and contracts while Terry Ryan tended to concentrate on talent and scouting. I may be wrong about that matrix but I do know they made a helluva good team together. I would think Krivsky will be the next GM once Ryan rights the ship. Bill Smith is a good baseball man who was simply in the wrong position. He flourished in the scouting of Latino players. This looks like a good move for the Twins. I know Twins fans are happy. I know I'm happy.
