Yankees plan to talk to C.J. Wilson

By Matt Snyder

In a very thin crop of free agent pitchers, C.J. Wilson is the best of the bunch. And while the high-spending Yankees did have the best record in the American League, the last few spots of their rotation would appear to be a weakness moving forward (yes, the offense is aging and will likely regress a bit, but those guys are all locked in contractually). So it's not much of a surprise that the Yankees have Wilson on their radar.

“We haven’t talked to him yet, but we will,” said general manager Brian Cashman (New York Post). “[The Rangers] have won a lot and he’s been a big part of that, so we’ll certainly talk to him.”

And here's the thing worth noting: If the Yankees decide they definitely want Wilson, they'll surely get him. They can outpay anyone (unless the Nationals really wanna get crazy) and Wilson doesn't seem married to any particular destination. Being left-handed also makes him a great fit in Yankee Stadium.

Wilson, 30, was 16-7 with a 2.94 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 206 strikeouts in 223 1/3 innings during the 2011 regular season, making his first All-Star team. He did have a poor postseason showing, but Cashman told the Post he's not worried about that.

Yankees plan to talk to C.J. Wilson

And they wonder why Yankee fans dont take these arguments seriously...Get over it, the Yankees play in the biggest market, pay lower market teams in excess of 100 million annually, just to watch these same teams spend less than 40 on salaries and whine.

Great coaching, great farm system, great fans translates to 27 Championships!

love all the people who cry about the Yankee's money over and over.  they're full off it though cause they all would take the money if they could just like the baseball players and they all would spend the money if they could just like the yankees.  not a single one would stay a job that paid them less money because it was unfair to leave the current employer who couldn't match the money offered to leave.  yeah thats right you all heard me your all full of it caus eyou would all take the money too!!!!!!!  you all just hate cause the yankees are hot shit in a champaign glass and you are all just cold diarhea in a dixie cup.

do i think the yankees can use wilson yes.. do I want a ton of money spent on him..no.. i know the yanks need SP's.. i agree but lets not go crazy over wilson. he is a good pitcher that will make a killing off the thin..very thin fa market. The fact that the Yankees say they are interested just drove up the price for everybody else. lets not bid against ourselves here.. let someone else set the market and then we decide whether we sign him or not. There are some somewhat attractive fa's out there. Notice I didnt say studs. attractive(for a thin market).. buehrle.. jackson all would fit at the end of the rotation for me. That would allow the young arms to make another year in the minors possibly their last(betances, banuelos and brackman). If worse case scenario bring up a young kid and let him learn in the bullpen. Imagine banuelos as a late inning lefty(not a soft toseer, someone who throws gas) that can all but reduce all the lefty bats in the divsion to outs..nice bullpen..chamberlain in the 6th robertson/soriano 7 or 8 and mo to close.. hmm sounds good to me..oh yeah banuelos in any inning where you need a lefty

I can't believe you are trying to argue that the only reason the Yankees are successful is because they are in New York. Of course the Yankees are successful because of their passionate & immense NY/NJ/CT fanbase. How else could any team in sports maintain prolonged success without a large fanbase to support them? Yankees fans are the best fans in the world and the team has the largest worldwide brand of any sports organization.
xBomberx,

why do you think the reason is NY has such an "immense fanbase"???  uhhhhh -- maybe because in NYC ALONE has more people living there than the ENTIRE POPULATION OF 80% OF THE STATES.  the reason why the NY Yankee brand is popular???  maybe because they are the biggest team playing america's pasttime in the biggest city in the free world???  Just a stab in the dark.

it has nothing to do with crying or whining -- i am doing nothing but stating FACTS.  the ny'ers who can't grasp the fact NYC has as many people live there as the #2, #3 and #4 BIGGEST CITIES IN THE US COMBINED.

NYC also has the highest cost of living in the US -- therefore they can charge through the roof for tickets and with 9 million people in NYC alone to pick from -- they will sell out no matter what.  It has nothing to do with the passionate fans -- it has everything to do with having a pool of people to fill the seats being MUCH larger than ANY team in the mlb.

i do give props to steinbrenner for starting the yes network -- that basically gives the yankees a license to print money.  they can spend endless amounts on the team and never even think about not turning a profit.  the yankees are who they are because of shrewd business moves by steinbrenner.  how many teams in the mlb has almost 100 million A YEAR alone in sponsorship revenue???  how many teams have 325 million in ticket sales???  ny owns 34% of the yes network which profitted 400 million last year, as well as owning a stake in the hospitality management, which makes them 25 million a year.

the reason the yankees can do all this -- BECAUSE THEY PLAY IN NYC.  put the yankees in a small market and they couldn't do all of that.  the success of the yankees is based on the location of the team.

Wow, ignorance is bliss.....if your statement had any semblence of common sense then the Mets, Rangers, Islanders, Knicks would all be vying for championships year after year....Yanks 27, Mets 2, Knicks 1, etc etc etc......all these teams play in the biggest market, but how does one stand above the rest.

Been a Yankee fan and NY fan all my life, and while your point that being in the biggest martket has its advantages, whats your reasoning as to why every other team from NY hasnt fared as well.....Give credit where credit is due, the Yankees are great because the best players want to play there, the farm system has been able to produce talent for either the mother teams use (Jeter, Cano, Soriano, Petite, Posada, Nova, Chamberlain, Rivera) just to name this current generation of Yanks, or use as trade bait to get missing pieces. The coaching is top notch (Stengel, Martin, Torre , all hall of famers) and possible the best front office in baseball since 75.

Without the "evil empire" teams like Pittsburgh, KC would be forced to shut down, so instead of whining about our success, a simply thank you would be appreciated!

I know it's tough to be a provincial putz who see's everthing through Red Sux beer goggles, but hasn't your team tried to "buy" a championship for the last 10 years? Grow up, stop whining. and ejoy the quality of your beer drinking, fast food eating, down the stretch choking home team!!!

Yankees plan to talk to C.J. Wilson

You know, I'm sick and tired of these damn Yankee haters spewing the same nonsense about the Yankee payroll....Let me clue you in on something....The NEW YORK YANKEES are the greatest sports franchise of ANY sport...Bar NONE....If it wasn't for the Yankees, there wouldn't BE revenue sharing in baseball....Where do you think most of the money that goes to each ballclub COMES FROM....That's right the YANKEES...And that's a FACT...When they talk about TV ratings in the playoffs, guess what team gets the MOST ratings??  You guessed it, THE YANKEES...whether you love em or hate em....The YANKEES bring in the most revenue, the YANKEES bring in the highest ratings....Believe it when I tell you, when the Yankees got eliminated by the Tigers, Fox, TBS, TNT...they were PISSED....Spare me all this nonsense...
dear yankeesfansince75,

spare all of us with the whoa is me talk about the yankees.  the only reason NY is able to spend what they do is because they will always turn a profit because of the Yes Network televising all the yankee games.  also -- the only reason why the mlb wants NY in the playoffs is because IT IS THE LARGEST CITY IN THE UNITED STATES.  don't act like the whole world is a yankee fan -- there is 9 million reason why the mlb wants the yankees to do good and they all live in NYC.

so come off the soap box now, as you could insert ANY team in the mlb and let them play in a city with 9 million people in it and THAT would be the team the networks and mlb would want to good in the playoffs, as they have the most people to watch the game, thus they can charge more to companies to put commercials on during the game.

at some point -- ny fans will realize while the yankees are a great organization -- their success is based as much on an owner who was shrewd enough to start a tv station to televise their games and the location of their team.  the reason why he could start a tv station -- NY is the largest city in the USA.  the reason why NY can blow 200+ million a year on salary -- because they will always turn a profit no matter what because of the tv deal.  so knock off the talks of being the greatest anything -- the reason for ny's success is they live in the largest market and make the most money because of it.  quit acting like the yankees are just this middle america city trying to get by and everyone loves them.  only reason the networks and mlb loves them is because you have more people in one city (NYC) than most teams in the mlb have in their entire state.  get a clue.
