Phillies 'in serious pursuit' of Michael Cuddyer

Earlier Friday evening, reports surfaced that Jim Thome had agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Phillies. On the heels of that, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly is now reporting that the Phillies are "in serious pursuit" of utility player Michael Cuddyer.

Cuddyer, 32, has played his entire 11-year career for the Twins. He's played everywhere except shortstop and catcher in a major-league game before (yes, he even has one inning on the hill under his belt), but he's best used at the corner outfield spots or first base. Team that with the fact that Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and left fielder Raul Ibanez is a free agent, and Cuddyer appears to be a perfect fit. He could fill in at first base while Howard recovers, if Thome can't handle the position defensively (which is a decent bet), or serve as the everyday left fielder throughout the season.

Cuddyer made the All-Star team for the first time in 2011. He hit .284 with 20 home runs, 70 RBI, 70 runs, 11 stolen bases and an .805 OPS. He has the reputation as a high-character player and would absolutely be a fit for the Phillies. Oh, and if it matters, word is that Cuddyer and Thome are good friends.

Phillies 'in serious pursuit' of Michael Cuddyer

The Cardinals are never "in trouble" they way the Red Sox, Yanks and Phillies can be.  We don't expect to make the playoffs every single year with a payroll of only $100 MM.  And if they don't sign Pujols, big deal.  The club didn't get anything out of him until August this year so they'll survive next year too.

"Let's see, Cliff Lee didn't put you over the top but this guy will?  Go Cards!"

Let's see, Pujols is a free agent, and I don't see St. Louis making any moves yet in case they can't re-sign him.  That can be a disaster for your Cardinal team, especially if he signs somewhere else in the NL Central.  Let's see, looks like the Cubs and possibly the Brewers need a first baseman.

The Phillies HAVE a first baseman, and are looking for a backup.  Cuddyer is a perfect fit, since he can move to left when Howard returns, or back up Utley and Polanco.  Nothing dumb at all about signing this guy.

I am #1 a TWINS fan, my second favorite team is the fightin' Phils, so if he does leave the Twins, I hope he would go to Philadelphia, he's a Virginia native, that would bring him closer to home.  He's not only a great player, but a real team guy.

Phillies 'in serious pursuit' of Michael Cuddyer

Cuddyer does seem like the perfect fit for the Phillies if they're wiling to pay him what the other teams might offer. The fact that he can play 1st, 3rd and the outfield, and is a right handed bat screams common sense for the Phillies to pursue him. They may not have enough left in the bank though with the star studded lineup they already have. This may come down to how bad Cuddyer wants to pursue a championship, and how much room there is between the Phillies offer, and what other clubs put on the table.

All indications are that MC is going to the Cubs or the Orioles, I bet Theo is going to scoop him up in ChiTown.

first off the twins are going nowhere. thome already played here and can tell cuddyer how great it is. the phils are still the frontrunners in the NL East for 2 more seasons with Doc, Lee, and Hamels. Cuddyer can play 1b, 3b and OF, which the Phils really need. This is a no-brainer. Make it happen!!!
