Derek Lowe traded to Indians

Starting pitcher Derek Lowe has been traded by the Braves to the Indians, the Braves announced Monday afternoon.

Lowe is set to make $15 million in 2011, but Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com has learned that the Braves will pay $10 million of that. In return, the Braves will get Chris Jones, a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher. Jones was 7-1 with a 3.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings for High-A Kinston this past season.

According to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus, Jones has average velocity but a "good breaking ball and tons of deception." Goldstein further says that left-handers "can't touch" Jones and he's a possible left-handed specialist out of the bullpen.

Lowe, 38, was 9-17 with a 5.05 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 187 innings. He's a two-time All-Star, but hasn't been really good for a full season since 2008 with the Dodgers. He has been good in stretches for the Braves, most notably September of 2010, when he was 5-0 with a 1.17 ERA.

Vdaddy:

Wrong. Carmona's back and Indians' pitching woes shall continue in 2012

Best trade Frank Wren has ever made

This goes down in history as one of the best trades ever for The Atlanta Braves. Even if  Jones becomes a perenial Minor leaguer, the way is now opened for some of the young pitching studs to see mound time in 2012. To the Indians, I'm sorry you have Derek Lowe, good guy, bad pitcher, he will never see 500 again, or even close, you would be better off with Carmona.

smart move for Indians!!..Lowe for 5mil..and give away...nothing...
with Jimenez(i still don't like that trade..) and Lowe they are going to contend..or at least they will try..Lowe could also be a good trade bait in summer if the team are outside of the race!..

Lowe already shows he can pitch effectevely in AL...i think if he can command his sinker as he did in RedSox years(with decrease speed..of course..)..don't matter where he plays

I have been critical on the tribe lately, but I do like this move. Relax. All this means is Carmona won't be back - thank god. The Indians viewed Lowe and Carmona the same. Now, they get Lowe for 2 million less than Carmona. It's a nice move and brings a veteran into the locker room. I agree we need some hitters, and please don't resign Sizemore.

Lowe is set to make $15 million in 2011,
Matt, I assume you meant 2012?

If he's still to make $ 15 mill the rest of this year, he must have a hell of a contract!

Derek Lowe traded to Indians

Derek threw over 180 IP this season, in fact, he threw 188 IP and was durable.  How many pitchers threw over 180 for the Indians this season?  2.  In fact, Derek has thrown over 180 IP for 10 straight seasons, averaging 33 starts during that span.  That means he is durable and we know he can stay healthy.  Josh Tomlin, who was on his way to a very good season for the Indians was hurt in August and missed the rest of the season.  The Indians could have used him.  Even with Carmona's struggles, he still reached 184 IP.  So the Indians now have 4 guys who can reach that number with Masterson, Jimenez, Carmona, and Lowe.  And this is important to note too, the Indians are not counting Derek to be their number one starter, or even their ace.  He is going to be the 4 or 5 starter.  People forget that Derek won 16 games in 2010 for the Braves.  He can give the Indians 14 wins, and be that mentor that Kevin Millwood was for the young staff back in 2005.  I see nothing wrong with it.

Now, if we can just unload our great Japanese Experiment disaster this offseason. Lowe got alot more slack than the Japanese pitcher from 2010. Lowe pitched worse than he did this year bur, never got demoted. Ol' Bobby would have benched or demoted his ass!!

Derek Lowe traded to Indians

The Red Sox have been in shambles ever since they jettisoned Lowe! It's time to bring him back and make one final run for a World Series title before David Ortiz retires after next season.

The Braves suck !

They melted like butter on a hot potato.
If I were on the Braves I would want out of there too.
