Yankees pick up options on Cano, Swisher

Cano

By Evan Brunell

The Yankees have exercised their team options on Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher, the team said in a news release.

Cano's option was a no-brainer. One of the best second basemen in the game, Cano hit .302/.349/.533 in 2011 with 28 home runs. In 2010, he finished third in the MVP voting. He has a team-friendly contract however, and gave the Yankees consecutive club options in 2012 and 2013. Cano will earn $14 million in 2012, with 2013's option valued at $15 million. Agent Scott Boras recently appealed to GM Brian Cashman to renegotiate his deal. Cano recently switched agents to Boras, so Boras will not earn a commission on these club options; he gets a commission for whatever deal he signs, so while there is certainly motivation on his end, Cano, if he was a free agent, would be in line for a lot of money. Instead, the 29-year-old he will hit the free agent market at age 31, and that's a significant difference in contracts.

As for Swisher, word surfaced that the club was considering not picking up his $10.5 million option and pursuing Carlos Beltran in free agency, but it never made sense for New York not to pick up the option. The 30-year-old had a strong year, hitting .250/.374/.449 and would have been worth the money to any team, not just the Yankees. Even if Cashman wants to pursue Beltran, picking up Swisher's option and trading him is the more obvious move rather than straight releasing him.

ya swish might've played well in the regular season, but when it came to the playoffs he sure did lay a fat goose egg.  I have so much respect for Cano.  The guy can move on defense and his glove his always gold glove capable.  He deserves his money, but swish on the other hand doesn't come close to being worth the money that the yankees spent on him.  They are the yankees so its probably no sweat off their forehead to waste money.

As a Yankee fan, I personally have seen enough of Nick Swisher.  I'm sure he is great in the clubhouse and a great guy to have on the team, but he is an automatic out when he faces good pitching, which is why he struggles so much in the postseason.  If it were me, I'd give Eduardo Nunez a shot in right field next year.  The kid has shown he can hit major league pitching and has speed and a decent arm so transitioning to right field should not be too much of an issue for him.

If there is still anybody that doubts that CC Sabathia, who is represented by Scott Boras, will not be opting out of his current contract this offseason read that above statement.

Eugene, Scott Boras does not represent Sabathia.  CC's agent is Brian Peters.

As a life long Yankee fan since the losing days of 1965, its tough to see Cashman and the Yanks continue to re-sign overpaid players ( Swisher ) who don't produce when it counts ( post season ).  As good as Sabathia is, they should hold the line on him as well..........his post season performance has not been stellar either.  I would give him an extra year ( Team option ) and thats it.  Who else is going to pay him 23 mill a year ?  The Cards proved that if you play good fundamental baseball, with lots of key parts, you can win.  Girardi has no clue on how to manage to win a big game.  If Yanks don't hit 3 run homers, they can't win.  Cards won it all without their best pitcher, too.  Yanks should stand up to CC and tell him to walk if he wants out.  If we had a good GM, who knew how to make creative moves, this wouldn't be a problem.  Stop throwing money around, it doesn't work.  We are stuck with AROD for 6 more years and have to deal with an unproductive Texiera in the post season for many more years as well.

............yeah, and hes an automatic out in October.  Should have sent him packing.  Hopefully now they'll use him as trade bait for a good arm.

Teams win World Series. Players do not.

If Swisher has some team appeal, then I applaud the decision to keep him (although the cost appears a little high).

For many years, the concept of simply buying the best players with stacks of cash has failed to work. Build a team, and some loyalty, and the glory will come.
