Teixeira not a fan of expanded playoffs

Mark TeixeiraBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Mark Teixeira nearly gave us a preview of the new playoff format, but the Yankee first baseman is happy with the way the system works now.

Teixeira hit two homers, including a grand slam, to give the Yankees a 7-0 lead against the Rays on Wednesday, and had his team been able to keep that lead, we would have had a play-in game for the American League wild card.

Starting as soon as next season (but more likely in 2013), we'll have that anyway, as Bud Selig has championed an extra wild card team and a one-game playoff between the two wild card teams. Count Teixeira against it -- pointing to Wednesday night's excitement as exhibit A.

Full Playoff Coverage

"Last night proves that over 162 games, you still have (games that matter)," Teixeira told Brendan Prunty of the Star-Ledger. "You still had 4-5 games that meant a lot to each of those teams. The baseball fan gets to turn on the TV and watch that at once. It's pretty cool."

Teixeira joked that if MLB needed more excitement, "we can just have home run derbies in extra innings. Starting pitchers can go out and box for a couple of innings."

Of course, in the end, he hit the nail on the head -- "I guess if we can get one extra game on TV and make a couple of extra bucks -- I guess that's what it's all about."

That said, plenty of people said the same thing when Selig introduced the wild cards -- and that's worked out pretty well.

Man that is some selected hate stats for Tex CFFL. You forgot to mention though that he is likely going to be a Hall of Famer. By the end of his career Tex will likely clear 500 HRs with a few rings & a room full of gold gloves. I would like to see more hits in the postseason though, he was garbage in the 09 WS, but you happened to leave out his best playoff series in 2010 against the Twins.

Why is it that every picture I see of Teixeira he has his mouth open like an idiot.  Do these overpaid athletes have any idea that they sign these giants contracts because of the extra money from games like these?

Gotta love vegasrugger ... interesting use of parentheses.

Seriously, who cares what Teixeira thinks?

4 teams in 9 years.

$76 Million in Salary and counting.

Got a ring in 2009 ... Big Freakin' deal.

Hitting .214 in the Postseason overall.

Hit .136 in the 2009 World Series (.222 in 2009 ALCS)(.167 in 2009 ALDS).

Shorten the seaons, and add more playoff teams.
That is the best part of the game.
This past week was great.
The other six months were boring.

Teixeira not a fan of expanded playoffs

Look what would have happened this year if that stupid Selig system in was place.  The last day of the season, instead of it being one of the most memorable in the history of the game would have been just a ho-hum day at the park because all the teams would have played another game the very next day.  It would have killed the pitching staff for the actual playoffs too.  THis is nothing more than an attempt to put a few dollars in some pockets.  If preseason plus 162 games plus two rounds of playoffs plus the World Series isn't enough for you Bud then maybe, just maybe, you're a Commish IN THE WRONG SPORT.  LEAVE OUR GAME ALONE - BETTER YET - RETIRE BUD RETIRE!

Pretty soon 24 out of 30 teams will have a shot at one-gamer to keep playing.  Lame, the system is good now - expanding the playoffs diminishes the act  of getting there.
