Reds All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips could become a free agent after the season, but the Reds hold a one-year, $12 million option for 2012. They will exercise the option and retain Phillips -- according to general manager Walt Jocketty -- reports John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Phillips had expressed disappointment earlier this season that he hadn't yet heard anything about his contract, also saying he didn't just want the option picked up. He wants an extension, too. The good news for Phillips is that Fay is also reporting the Reds are having "preliminary" discussions with Phillips' agent about an extension.

If the Reds are expecting the so-called "hometown discount" from Phillips, they should think again.

“No bueno. This is my last contract,” Phillips said when asked about a discount to stay in Cincy (MLB.com). “There is no homeboy hookup. I just want to be paid what I am worth.”

Phillips, 30, made his second All-Star Game this season and is likely on his way to a third straight Gold Glove. He's hitting .294 with 18 homers, 81 RBI, 89 runs, 11 steals and a .798 OPS. He also has a career-high 35 doubles. Oh, and he also landed third on CBSSports.com's Twitter 140 (click here to see him talk about that at the All-Star Game media day). So, yeah, he's very well-rounded.

Report: Reds picking up Phillips' option

Glad to see BP will be back, although time will tell how badly he wants to retire a Red.  Does he honestly think Cincinnati can afford to pay him what he is worth?  If the extension alone is $12M and he thinks he has 4 or 5 good years left in the tank.....all of a sudden, we're talking about real money.  I can't see the Reds spending $60-80M on one guy not named Votto, even though he is the face of the franchise.  I'd love to see it happen, but will be mightily surprised if it does.  I'm guessing 2 or 3 years around $14-15M tops.

Big reds Fan....however, not a huge BP fan.  Like his D...but when it comes to clutch hitting, not impressed!!!
I would love to get pitching, in lieu of this signing, but i am not Jockety!

Respect for BP.  But.........after he got picked off 2nd base in Cleveland while losing his "concentration", the 2011 Reds never recovered.  All the cosmic tumblers fell into place in 2010...while not having a winning record vs a winning team. (?)   Keep BP, release DB...and Dusty's coaches save Speier.  DB's "line-up de jour" were given passes by the media and game announcers.  "Everybody plays on my team"......is something audable for Little League coaches NOT MLB managers.  Dusty needs to go.

Report: Reds picking up Phillips' option

As a lifelong Reds fan, I like Phillips but it just p... me off knowing the Reds will go out of their way to sign Phillips (who is a great player) but pass when it comes to getting involved with pitchers like Greinke and Cliff Lee. By the way, how are the teams doing who signed those guys? Oh yea, they are blowing everyone out in their division. PITCHING wins...period!!! If we have to spend 29 million on Votto and Phillips and have a bunch of morons for a rotation, then trade these two and get a Halladay or Sabathia or a Weaver. Something!! Bolster your rotation and you can get by with lesser talent at postions.

Its like football. If you have a great offensive line, then you can be mediocre at the skilled positions and be very good.

Report: Reds picking up Phillips' option

BP offered major relief from whatever tedium we were served this year from Dustmop's otherwise underachieving, overplatooned, overmanaged, undercoached band of completely lost souls.

Brandon Phillips at least made St. Lousy nervous.
