UtleyBy Evan Brunell

The Phillies' Chase Utley, who suffered a concussion on Wednesday, will be out longer than anticipated.

“He’s going to be re-examined on Saturday,” GM Ruben Amaro Jr. told CSNPhilly.com. “If the test goes well, he could go ahead and meet the team in Houston on Monday. But I don’t expect him to play the next two series just so we can be cautious. That’s my guess.”

This means that Utley likely  will not play for the remainder of Philadephia's road trip, which stretches until next Wednesday, Sept. 14, before hosting the Marlins in a Thursday doubleheader. The team then welcomes St. Louis for a four-game weekend series, the apparent target series for Utley's return. The Phillies can afford to be cautions with a postseason spot secure (as well as a division title), so it's a no-brainer to keep Utley out of action until he can return 100 percent from the concussion, suffered by being hit in the back of the head on a pitch.

“It’s very mild, we think it’s very slight, but it’s a concussion nonetheless,” Amaro said. “Chase is already feeling better. He’s getting some rest. We’ll know more Saturday.”

One of the more underrated players the last few years, the 32-year-old is experiencing his worst season since 2004, the year prior to becoming a full-time player. He's batting .262/.344/.461 in 393 plate appearances with 36 extra-base hits. Coupled with his strong defense, he's still one of the better second basemen in the game.

That may have been true in the previous century when nobody cared about concussions and just assumed you "got your bell rung."  It's the same attitude that people in the 1700s had about germs--if you can't seet them then they can't hurt you.  But this is the 21st century.  We have something called "science" (who can google that to find out what it is is...it's spelled s-c-i-e-n-c-e).  And what our friends called doctors at hospitals tell us (you can google that too, I doubt you know what I'm referring to there either) is that they now have medical tests to determine brain injuries...that's what a concussion is by the way...a brain injury.  And according to those doctors, Utley has one of the those "brain injuries."  And like any injury, there is a treatment.  If you don't believe that, then the next time you cut yourself or break a bone, don't bother getting treatment for that either...just "man up" and keep going.

The biggest obstacle between the Phillies and a World Series title is the health of their players. Starters throwing too many pitches and Utley, Howard and Rollins all dealing with injuries. This concussion is to the Phillies 3 hitter! It could linger for months or longer.

He ought to take all the time he needs.  The Phils have it locked up and don't have to play him...play the last 7-10 games and be ready for the playoffs.

Concussions are serious issues.  We on know a small part of the long term effects these have on human beings.  the 3 NHL players recently passed all had previous concussions.  I have a friend who had a few concussions and as outgoing and vibrant as he was he became very depressed. He had everything - beautiful wife, beautiful kids, greta big house, a lucrative job and lots of money.  He bacame distant - from his family and friends.  He's was diagnosed with depression.  He's no longer with us!

The Phillies, who have a huge lead, should let Chase rest and seek the proper medical treatment while he still can.  There's no reason to rush back.  Let him get healthy and If he's ready for the post season let him go.  But don't rush him back and put him at further risk for any potential set backs.

But I would like to see Chase tell the trainer, team Doc and Charlie Manuel "I'm okay, I want to play."
Are you aware of Utley's past? He has come back early from broken bones. He came back from hip surgery and was playing months before he was supposed to even be fielding balls again. He's a machine that constantly plays through pain.

However, this isn't pain. This is damage to one's brain. They are double digit games up on 2nd place Atlanta. Why would they risk it? For all you know, he DID say he wants to come back, but with athletes now showing serious damage after playing with years of concussions, they are rightfully taking things a little more seriously. He says he's feeling better. They're just making sure.

When you think of tough athletes, Andre Waters is near the top of that list along with guys like Ronnie Lott, etc. Ask him if you think he should have played through the headaches like other macho guys in his era.

Oh, wait. You can't. Maybe ask his widow.
