Cue the doomsday scenarios, because the Red Sox might have lost another starting pitcher to injury. All-Star Josh Beckett was cruising along Monday when catcher Jason Varitek summoned an athletic trainer to look at Beckett. After a brief conversation on the mound, Beckett left the game. He was reportedly limping on his way off the field, favoring his right foot. He may have caught his cleat on something while delivering a pitch (Boston.com). It was later revealed Beckett sprained his right ankle (WEEI via Twitter). Beckett has flown back to Boston to have his ankle examined by a foot specialist.

"I've never had it happen before," he said. "It’s something in my ankle, I’m not sure what,” Beckett said (Boston.com). “It's always concerning. That's my power leg. With the way I pitch, I don’t think I can cut my leg off. It’s definitely stiff.”

The Red Sox have serious starting pitching issues right now. Clay Buchholz is trying to return from a back injury, Daisuke Matsuzaka is out for the season, Erik Bedard has been scratched from his next start with knee soreness, John Lackey has been inconsistent at best and now Beckett is down.

Still, Beckett doesn't want people to start worrying that it's a serious injury just yet.

"It's pretty bad timing," Beckett said (Boston.com). "But I could be back out there in six days. We'll see. Let's not put the cart in front of the horse. Let's do our due diligence."

Beckett, 31, entered Sunday 12-5 with a 2.54 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 149 strikeouts in 170 innings this season. He had thrown 3 2/3 shutout innings with six strikeouts Monday before being pulled. Alfredo Acevas took over for him in the fourth.

You know what I meant. If the East has 2 teams in the playoffs, which it's obvious they will. And technically I'm still right because the NL East will send the other wildcard.

First off I am a Yankees fan, BUT I am not sure i want to win the AL East pennant and face Verlander 2x's in a 5 games series. There is no guarantee that CC wins game 1 against anyone and our pitching has fallen off as of late. Going to be an interesting post season.
Ummm, considering the seeds aren't set, how do you know the AL East winner won't face the AL West? Pretty sure that it is 1 vs. 3 and 2 vs. 4 if the East gets both wildcards, which they will. Detroit is only a half game behind Texas for the 2nd seed. Winning the AL East doesn't not lock you into playing the Central.

If you're not even going to bother trying to make sense, why open your mouth?

He'll probably miss a start or 2.  Of course it depends on how severe the sprain is.  Thankfully it's nothing a little rest, ice, and tape can't fix.
