Price sets Rays record with 14 strikeouts

By Matt Snyder

Considering Rays starter David Price is a two-time All-Star, finished second in Cy Young voting last season and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, we know he has talent. Also note his 358 strikeouts in the past two seasons heading into his Sunday start in Toronto. And in said Sunday start, he showed the Blue Jays just how good his stuff can be.

Price struck out 14 batters, marking a new franchise record -- breaking Scott Kazmir's previous record of 13. The first seven outs Price recorded were strikeouts. He struck out the side twice and punched out two hitters in four different innings. Unfortunately, Price piled up 111 pitches through seven innings and was unable to get closer to the major-league record (in nine-innings) -- 20, held by Randy Johnson, Kerry Wood and Roger Clemens (who did it twice).

Rays starting pitchers have had good success with striking out the Blue Jays in this series. James Shields struck out 12 in his complete-game victory Friday and Jeff Niemann struck out six in 6 1/3 innings Saturday.

Price sets Rays record with 14 strikeouts

As a die-hard Blue Jays fan, this guy has pitched like Cy Young against us ever since he came in the league. He may be under the radar around the rest of the league, but believe me, we know this guy can pitch.

Price sets Rays record with 14 strikeouts

Rays fan here who appreciates the recognition for David Price. Even though his record isn't indicitive of a stellar season, he is one of the top pitchers in the American League and the Rays will be counting on him to help in their pursuit of the Yankees. On a side note and biased opinion, its my belief the Rays have the best rotation in the American League. Their starters have gone 7 innings or more in 13 of the last 14 games. If you really think about that little tidbit, you'll realize how truly impressive that is.  Go Rays, keep it up!!!
