As the Indians brace for the return of Jim Thome -- he's going to arrive for Friday's game and is expected to hit cleanup, by the way -- they also had to deal with some injury issues. Specifically, the Indians officially placed both starting pitcher Josh Tomlin and outfielder Michael Brantley on the 15-day disabled list.

Tomlin, 26, is 12-5 with a 4.25 ERA and 1.08 WHIP this season for the Tribe, but he's presently suffering from right elbow soreness. Nick Hagadone has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus to take Tomlin's roster spot. Hagadone has a 3.18 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 45 1/3 innings for Columbus.

Brantley, 24, is hitting .266/.318/.384 with seven home runs and 13 stolen bases. Brantley has been playing mostly left field since Kosuke Fukudome was moved to center upon Shin-Soo Choo's return to right. Brantley has been hampered by an injury to his wrist for nearly all of August. He's slumped and hasn't started near as many games as he otherwise would have. Ezequiel Carrera will leadoff Friday night in Brantley's absence. The corresponding move for Brantley hitting the DL is the official activation of Thome.

These are of course no good news. Tomlin has been the most winning pitcher of the TRIBE and shows a big young potential who could help the team for many seasons. On the other side Brantley has showm good progress compared with last year. He had covered the outfield in all three positions and has also had good clutch plays. It is a really pity to lose both players entering the final month of the series. Hope the best for you guys!

Unbelievable number of injuries to Indians players this year... same as last year.  Now we've lost (arguably) our 2nd best pitcher for 2 weeks heading into Sept.  This team is either real soft or has had some of the worst luck I've ever seen for two years running now.

The Indians are about as brittle a team as I have ever seen. I could understand all these injuries if this were the Cleveland Browns, but this is baseball, people. How many times have you heard of someone injuring their knee 3 times SLIDING (Sizemore)? Or how many times have you heard of players repeatedly going on the DL for swinging a bat (Hafner), or running (Hafner), or STRETCHING (Kipnis). Brantley probably hurt his wrist swinging a bat too. Tomlin is about the only normal injury that they have had. As of yesterday, Choo had that dreaded "side soreness" that indicates yet another oblique. Maybe if these guys were taught how to swing instead of flailing away and corkscrewing themselves into the ground, they wouldn't hurt themselves.
