Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulous and outfielder Jose Bautista fired back at allegations of sign-stealing, with Bautista revealing that the four bullpen members quoted in the original story were members of the White Sox.

"The whole thing is stupid" Anthopoulous opened his comments with, as Blue Jays broadcaster Mike Wilner relayed.

Here are some more quotes from Anthopoulous:
  • "Spend the time, go through the footage. See if you can find a man in a white shirt." -- Speaking about the mysterious man in a white shirt that was allegedly stealing signs and relaying them to the Blue Jays hitters.
  • "Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. ESPN is a good organization, but they needed to do their homework here."
  • "Because four players on another team said something, a story is written and we're all sitting here. This is nuts."
  • "This is nothing. No phone calls, no nothing. Haven't heard from anyone in MLB today. This is nothing."
  • "Been in this organization for years, never a phone call, e-mail, text, nothing. We have GM meetings, this would have come up."
Also, Anthopoulous added that he gave a quote to ESPN and asked they seek out a "former somebody" -- an ex-player, coach or executive -- to get their take on the issue. ESPN did not do so.

"Last year it was steroids, this year stealing signs," Bautista said, referencing how he had to contend with allegations of steroid use after he came out of nowhere to become one of the best players in the game. "I'm interested to see what they come up with next year."

My feeling is that if these bullpen pitchers noticed this behavior, they should have called the dugout and advised the manager so he could take it from there.  I think this is a non story, a tale that seemed to take on it's own life and grow and grow.

Starblazer, Joe Girardi has nothing to do with it, he was asked a speculative question and gave an honest answer. He did not accuse Toronto of anything.

He's right about ESPN needing to get its facts straight. He's dead wrong(and just being civil) about ESPN being a good organization. ESPN stands for Extremely Stupid Patronizing Network. Their magazine has less credibility than Mad Magazine. The only good thing that ever came out of that rag was their give away fleece(I still have mine).

Even if they're stealing signs, so what? Selig allows drug users, wife-beaters and gamblers to go scott-free. Teams need to prove it and then present real evidence. Giving any credibility to anything ESPN writes is like giving Rolling Stone magazine any credibility for the hacks who cover politics for that rag.

To the White Sox relievers and Joe Girardi, I say shut up and worry about how  you and your teams play.

The most surprising thing about this is learning that apparently no-one in the White Sox(or any other teams they "warned") bullpen owns a damn camera. Take a few pics next time. OMG THEY HIT MOAR HRs AT HOME! IMPOSSIBLE! or WOW they have more HRs the last few years! It's not like they've gotten better or anything! or it's not like Rogers is a hitter's park! ALL the stats they use are completely pointless scientifically if there's nothing to compare them to. Show us more HR happy improving teams in a dome w/ a big time slugger in a hitter's park. What are their stats like? I'm starting to think Sports Journalism is more like TMZ than actual intelligent reporting, if that exists somewhere anymore. YES, THIS IS STUPID. STATS WITHOUT ACTUAL EVIDENCE MEANS NOTHING.

guelphfan,

While i do agree that this whole thing is silly and the Yankees shouldn't be accusing, I don't think you're in any place to be calling out Burnett or the Yankees for that matter. From where I stand, Burnett won a world series game 2 and he, along with the Yankees, have a ring. Sure, I'd be angry if a guy left my squad too but this just makes you look silly. Also, I'm pretty sure the Blue Jays let Rios go and the Sox claimed him. Pretty sure he batted .280 last year with a pretty decent year. His average is down this year but then again, it seems like the entire Sox team is suffering...

The ESPN guy was on the fan... and wow.. guy had nothing to say other then 4 guys (who all play on the same team PS) in a visiting teams bullpen saw a guy in a white shirt raise his hand before pitches...... Insane that this even turned into a story. Espn must be DYING for attention right now!

Agreed! It's unbelievable that allegations such as these can be written by a "News" organization without any responsibility in having facts. It's just mindboggling.

Anthopolous should be challenging the comissioner to hold the accusers accountable. Chicago and ESPN, with serious consequences unless they have proof.

Its just jealousy from these other teams. The Jays are an up and coming team with some great young talent and these other teams are trying to put them down. They can't face the fact that the Toronto coaches were smart enough to see "a hole" in the swing of a former journeyman outfielder and manage to actually fix it and turn this guy into the most feared slugger in baseball today. I'm a Jays fan so obvious bias will be seen here but , coming from 2 broken down, ageing teams like the White Sox and Yanks well, what would you expect, I guess. Oh, by the way SOX/YANKS, how are Rios and Burnett doing respectively for ya. ( I won't mention Wells out in California because at least the Angels arn't ragging on us.) Go Jays, Go Alex
