NicasioBy Evan Brunell

Juan Nicasio, who broke the C1 vertebrae in his neck when a line drive caromed off his head, is making incremental progress on the road to recovery.

"He's definitely moving in the right direction," manager Jim Tracy told the Denver Post.

While Nicasio remains in the hospital, he has been able to move around for the second straight day and spoke to his mother on Monday, which reportedly calmed the right-hander down. Rockies trainer Keith Dugger has remained with Nicasio and will do so through Wednesday night. Dugger is also in contact with Nicasio's family in the Dominican Republic, along with a translator. His mother, Aurelia Prado, has received a passport and is working on a visa to visit her son.

The 24-year-old rookie was hit by a line drive off the bat of Ian Desmond on Friday to lead off the second inning with a 0-1 count. It was Nicasio's 13th start of the year. On the year, the righty has been a pleasant surprise with a 4.14 ERA in 71 1/3 innings, striking out 58 and walking 18.

"He has such a love for the game. He is always smiling," pitching coach Bob Apodaca said. "He's a good kid. We are all pulling for him."
