Banuelos to relieve in Triple-A before promotion

BanuelosBy Evan Brunell

One of the Yankees' top prospects is starting pitcher Manny Banuelos, all of 20-years-old and already pitching for the Triple-A affiliate, and a promotion to the majors is all but assured at some point in the next few weeks.

Manager Joe Girardi told ESPN New York that Banuelos would need to relieve in Triple-A before a promotion, to allow the youngster to adjust to a new role. You can expect that to happen before long, as Banuelos can make a major impact the rest of the way, especially given he's a southpaw.

New York has one lefty in the bullpen in Boone Logan, who is largely limited to facing just left-handers in brief stints, which is why he's only tossed 29 innings this year, but appeared in 43 total games. However, he hasn't exactly done his job, allowing lefties to reach at at a .257/.325/.459 clip. He has struck out 29 percent of batters, though, which is a strong mark. Still, the Yankees need someone who can come in and shut down left-handers and ideally pitch well enough against righties to get through a clean inning. That can be Banuelos.

Banuelos is nigh untouchable in trade discussions, unless someone like Felix Hernandez were to become available. It's easy to see why, as the left-hander has a 3.47 ERA on the season in 106 1/3 innings, striking out 107 and walking 55. He does need to work on his control, but that little wrinkle gets hidden more effectively in a relief role. Banuelos has the potential to add another weapon to the bullpen and help make up for the loss of Joba Chamberlain and Pedro Feliciano, the latter a lefty who will miss the entire year thanks to injury

Banuelos to relieve in Triple-A before promotion

Why would they want him to relieve?
Sportsnuts101 it is because Boone Logan has been atrocious as a lefty specialist. The New York Yankees sorely need an upgrade out of their lefty specialist and that is why Manny Banuelos is being fast tracked to the bullpen.

He can take either Hughes or Burnetts spot in the rotation!
The Yankees are currently going with a 6-man rotation. Adding Banuelos would make it a 7-man rotation. Either Phil Hughes or AJ Burnett are going to pitch their way out of the starting rotation and make it a 5-man rotation again with Ivan Nova staying there. My money is on AJ Burnett also known as "Mr. I am not having fun pitching in New York" getting dropped from the rotation, especially since he has been placed on waivers.

Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! Obviously you can tell that I am very high on Manny Banuelos. As I said back in March of this year on the Yankees Fanatics page here on CBS Sports.com, I believed that he had the talent to get up here in Spetember when the rosters expanded and maybe even sooner. Here is the link to my comments on the Yankees Fanatics page: .

To say Boone Logan 'hasn't exactly done his job' is a complete understatement.

Banuelos is nigh untouchable in trade discussions, unless someone like were to become available.
Brian Cashman better not even consider this or any trade of Banuelos unless he is a glutton for punishment and enjoys watching pitchers from the Yankees farm system (e.g. Ian Kennedy, Tyler Clippard, et. al) go on to become All-Stars on other teams.

The Manny Banuelos countdown is officially on baby.
