Freddie FreemanBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt accomplished a rare feat on Monday, ejecting a Fredi (Gonzalez) and a Freddie (Freeman) in the Braves' game at Florida.

Gonzalez, the Braves' manager, was ejected for arguing balls and strikes during the fourth inning of the game, while Freeman was ejected after striking out to end the top of the eighth inning.

Gonzalez was ejected after Wedelstedt called a Derek Lowe pitch to Bryan Peterson a ball. After he did, he looked into the Braves dugout and ejected Gonzalez, who then walked out and argued for a moment.

"You can't argue balls and strikes," Gonzalez told David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "I deserve what I got."

Freeman thought he checked his swing against Steve Cishek with two strikes and two outs, but Wendelstedt called him out. After Freeman tossed his helmet, Wendelstedt tossed Freeman. Freeman never turned to say anything or show up Wendelstedt before the umpire tossed Freeman.

After the game, Freeman said the call on the strike was correct, but wasn't so sure about the ejection. He said he only asked Wendelstedt to check with the third base umpire.

"Couldn’t believe it. That was pretty incredible," Freeman said (via the AJC). "I didn’t say anything. There was no reason I should have been thrown out of this game. All I asked was, 'Why?' All he said was, 'You know what you got thrown out.' At the time, I didn't."

It was Gonzalez's third ejection of the season.

Umpire ejects Braves' Fredi and Freddie

The Ump was right for throwing out Gonzalez because everyone knows you can't argue balls and strikes.  Every Ump has his own version of the strike zone and it's up to both the hitter and the pitcher to know where it is.  The ejection of Freeman was totally unwarranted.  The kid asked for an appeal to third and tossed his helmet AS DOES ALMOST EVERY BATTER AFTER A K!  This kid has been a class-act all season and looks like the favorite for ROY - shame on you Wendelstedt.

Really?  Do you watch baseball?  Just about EVERY player when he makes an out tosses his bat or helmet.  It doesn't even have be exclusive to a bad call- it can be a player's own frustration with himself.

To throw Freeman out of that game for tossing his bat/helmet was uncalled for.  All that ump had to do was signal a fine and be done with it.  But this season it seems like many of these umps have to make it about themselves.

If you saw the Gonzalez ejection, you'd see that Wedlestadt was just itching to throw him out.  Did you even hear the audio??  I did, and it was clear that the ump WANTED Fredi to say one more word so he could toss him.

Look at the stats:  this year there have been more ejections than in previous years.  And more than one occassion I have watched an ump egg on a player (staring a player down after a bad call, etc) in the hopes he can toss that player.

The rule on throwing helmets is simple.  A player throw's one, the ump signals a fine--the player gets fined; then we move on.  WITHOUT the need for an ejection.

Maybe the Umps bookie told him to toss out Freddie as he had a side bet. This particular ump is as dumb as a box of rocks and couldn't remember which Freddie so he tossed both.
OK the Bookie part is a fable, but really I'm putting down the intelligence of rocks by comparing them to this ump.
