Jason Marquis was the Nationals' scheduled starting pitcher for Saturday night's game against the Mets. Instead, he's been removed from assignment and traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the team announced Saturday. The Diamondbacks send minor-league shortstop Zach Walters to the Nats.

Marquis, 32, is 8-5 with a 3.95 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 120 2/3 innings this season. He has had success in the NL West before, as the only All-Star team he ever made was in 2009 with the Rockies.

The Diamondbacks are four games out in the NL West and Marquis will slide into the rotation, probably for Micah Owings. As for the Nationals, Tom Gorzelanny could take back his rotation spot, but Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post believes Gorzelanny stays in the bullpen while either Tom Milone or Brad Peacock are promoted. Both have thrown the ball well this season, but Peacock is the more highly-regarded prospect.

Walters, 21, was hitting .302 with a .377 on-base percentage, 27 doubles, nine homers, 56 RBI and 12 stolen bases for Class A South Bend.

The DBacks lead the NL in Homeruns and just called up Paul Goldshmidt... so I think they have plenty of power. AZ needed pitching and wasn't going to trade good prospects for another bat. Goldshmidt hit a HR off Lincecum tonight, in his second MLB game. He is a beast! Looks like we finally have a 1B who can contribute.

DBacks lead the NL in most hitting categories, so thankfully we didn't mess with the lineup too much. We brought up the best hitter in the minors and added help in the pen and the rotation. I think Towers is doing an excellent job. We are tied with the WS Champs at 61-49 and we are only getting better.

The DBacks are only 1 game behind SF;That division is up for grabs.I'm not sure how much Marquis will help tham, but I like their chances to oust SF from the playoffs. They could have used a big bat more than another SP.A mediocre one at that.

Your absolutely right, was being a bit harsh on Marquis, just would like to see Diamondbacks make a move for more consistant offense. Definatly feel better about our rotation. Now lets make a move for some more offence please.

Marquis traded to Diamondbacks

Well, I would say its a great trade. Both teams got what they wanted. If the Nationals didnt trade him, he would have left in the offseason for nothing. Getting a prospect, even a guy who projects to be a utility player, is good for them. Not to mention the D-backs took on the rest of Marquis' salary. Arizona gets the 5th starter they have needed desperately. Now, do they actually have a shot at the playoffs? That remains to be seen, but Marquis will definitely help.

LMAO the guy below me trying to say this is a terrific trade for the nations...The SS Arizona gave you ISNT anything special. Dbacks didnt have him listed anywhere in there top prospects..Not even in there top 15. The scouts reports say he his potential is to be a pretty solid utility hitter that will most likey be a back up.

LOL nice trade there buddy..i can see MVP written all over that...NOT...

I agree with the other guy below me. Jason isnt a great pitcher but hes very solid. Specially considering the Dbacks will use him as there 5th starter..his numbers are good enough to be maybe a 3rd starter..

If your going to catch SF we needed another starter. Dbacks got a very servicable pitcher today and gave up almost nothing for him. Good trade

Wow,  Jason Marquis I'm impressed NOT!!!!!!!!
The guy is a solid back-of-the-rotation guy. That lengthens your rotation. He's also someone use to pitching in pennant races. If you want to catch SF, you need more arms. It's a nice move.

Report: Marquis traded to Diamondbacks

Wow,  Jason Marquis I'm impressed NOT!!!!!!!!  Are you kidding me????? Why not a 3rd baseman, sorry I love Ryan Roberts, but we need a bigger bat. Or a left fielder, we need a big bat in line up, a bigger more consistant bat please!!! Your killing me :(
