Joe BlantonBy C. Trent Rosecrans

If Joe Blanton returns to the Phillies this season, it will be out of the bullpen, not as a starter, he told's Todd Zolecki.

"I think there's zero percent chance i'll start this year," Blaton said. "There's just not enough time."

Blanton said he may be able to pitch out of the bullpen if all goes well with his return from nerve inflammation in his right elbow. However, surgery is still possible. Blanton will play catch on Thursday.

Blanton hasn't pitched since May 14. He was 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA in six starts this season. He is singed through next season.

If Blanton returns in 2011, it'll be in bullpen

The problem with Ky Joe in the bullpen is he starts slow giving up runs in his first inning then settling down for 4 or 5 innings then he is done. He would only be good for relief in a blow out when we need an inning eater. That won't happen very much so his place on the roster would be better used for someone else. If he can throw let him throw in the minors or winter ball to rehab because he better be Worley-like all of 2012. As it stands right now he is not even trade bait and he is making too much to out right release him so he better get it together and give us a superb year next year. For what we have paid him that is the least we should expect.

Too Bad He Can't Be Trade Bait

With all of the frustrated trade attempts for the Phils, it's a shame Blanton hasn't been pitching so they could consider his trade value.  Imagine talking to Houston about Pence and dangling Blanton, Cosart, and Singleton.  That's too much to give for Pence, but Houston wants pitching and such a move would save Worley as well as Colvin, the other top pitching prospect.
If Singleton is a young Howard--only 19--then maybe you let him finish a great year and try to get something better in the off-season, especially if you find the Phils come up one RH bat short of a World Series.

If Blanton returns in 2011, it'll be in bullpen

There will be no room in the bullpen for Blanton after the Phillies trade for some pitching before the deadline. For Blanton and the Phillies the best thing might be for him to scrap the rest of 2011 and come back strong in 2012. You don't want to risk further injury.
