Pirates officially 'disappointed' by call

Pirates president Frank Connelly has released a statement about the end of Tuesday night's Pirates-Braves game:

“The Pittsburgh Pirates organization is extremely disappointed by the way its 19-inning game against the Atlanta Braves ended earlier this morning. The game of baseball and this game in particular, filled with superlative performances by players on both clubs, deserved much better. We have filed a formal complaint with the Commissioner.

“While we cannot begin to understand how Umpire Jerry Meals did not see the tag made by Michael McKenry three feet in front of home plate, we do not question the integrity of Mr. Meals. Instead, we know that Mr. Meals’ intention was to get the call right. Jerry Meals has been umpiring Major League games for 14 years and has always done so with integrity and professionalism. He got this one wrong.

“For Pirates fans, we may have lost a game in the standings as a result of a missed call but this game, and the gutsy performances by so many of our players, will make us stronger, more unified and more determined as we continue the battle for the National League Central Division.”

@unforgiven, so the pirates were automatically going to win the game had they gotten that call?

It was a terrible call by a very tired and fatigued umpire who was ready for the game to end.  Both teams played well.  We will never know which team would have ultimately won the game legitimately.  The human element will always be part of the game, even the "I'm tired and want to go home" side of the human element.  Terrible call though.

The UMP just got tired... 19 innings.. that's longer than a double header. He got tired and wanted the game to end so he blew the call... Baseball has a bad rep for getting bad calls. Anyone ever heard of instant replay? It helps!

I've watched this play over and over again. There is NO clear visual evidence that he was tagged. It certainly looks like he may have been tagged, but it also looks like the catcher's arm comes through the runners arms un-impeded. You can easily see why he made that call, and to lambast him for calling what you can't even dispute on super slow-mo replay is ludicrous.
Unles you count video, which clearly shows him tagging him twice, as visual evidence.  Being that it is video, I sure call it visual evidence.  So obviously tagged, and obviously out.

Umpires do get it right 99.9% of the time but what upsets so many fans is that they can't admit when they do screw up.
99.9% of the time? I don't think so. I'd give them about 90% if we are talking about balls in play.

Anyone who can't see the tag on the left leg of Lugo is blind and need only watch Lugo's reaction as he gets up with his head down knowing he was tagged. Which makes his celebrations after being called safe all the more disgusting. What do you expect from wife beater? I watched this game live and while i've seen some bad losses this was the worst. It just seemed so pointless to end such a well played game. I saw the tag and was immediately thinking nice pitch, nice out, now who's this gutty kid gotta pitch to to get the 3rd out and get to the
20th? Worst anti climax ever. Bizarre.

@buxton  so the fact a player was ejected is same as the ump blowing a call that cost the pirates the win ..cause obviously after mclouth was ejected and all the bad calls the BRAVES still had chance to win but onc ehe made that call the game ended..i am BRAVES fan but that was BS he wanted to quit so he made up an excuse to do it..in this same game 2 times a phantom tag was called on force outs and steals just like baseball always does..noone cares about that but because he did it on a last play of game and coat a team 1st place in standing this was flat wrong he needs suspension ..tonight he will be on 3B line in front of pirates and will have same smirk on his face he had after game and he will eject at least 2 pirates tonight..so according to you that make sit even?..
