Ryan TheriotCardinals infielder Ryan Theriot is serving one-game suspension today for St. Louis' game against the Mets.

Theriot was offered a reduction of his two-game suspension for bumping an ump to one game if he served it today. He agreed, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Theriot was pencilled into the lineup at shortstop and batting leadoff, but manager Tony La Russa shuffled his lineup, putting Daniel Descalso at short and moving second baseman Nick Punto to the leadoff spot.

On Sunday, Theriot made contact with second base umpire Mike Muchlinski during an argument and was ejected.

Theriot's suspension reduced

That was a good decision all around.  Appeals take up a lot of time and the player generally loses anyway.  Just get it over with.  You are not allowed to make contact with an umpire, but a one game suspension is adequate.  I remember an incident in the 60s.  Julian Javier was trying to stretch a single into a double.  He slid into second base well ahead of the tag.  But the umpire did one of those anticipation calls.  He assumed Javier wouldn't make it and he started his out call before the play finished.  Then Javier hopped up off the bag and the umpire ran over toward him.  The replays showed the umpire was the one who caused the contact between them, but Javier was suspended rather than the umpire.  And the league president refused to even look at the replays because the players were not unionized yet.

Theriot's suspension reduced

Theriot took a plea bargain to reduce his suspension.
