Drew gruesomely fractures ankle; Gomez hurt

Stephen Drew, the Diamondbacks' shortstop, severely injured his ankle in the bottom of the fourth inning when he was called out at home against the Brewers. Arizona was down 1-0 at the time, and that score has held to the seventh inning. Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez also left the game with his own rough injury: a broken collarbone.

Drew's foot caught under his leg as he slid, twisting entirely in the opposite direction. He immediately grabbed his foot, twisted it back correctly and then collapsed to the ground. The Diamondbacks put out on Twitter that the 28-year-old fractured his ankle, with surgery likely. Manager Kirk Gibson said Drew is done for the season and said he "probably" needs surgery.

Gomez was sharing time in center with Nyjer Morgan this season. Gomez had earned 231 plate appearances to date and hit a putrid .222/.272/.382 line. He's not a major loss, but it still thins out the Brewers, who are now suddenly in need of an outfielder without many internal options.

Warning: The video below depicting Drew's injury is graphic.

At least one true fan on here.  I agree completely.  I am a D'Backs fan and so obviously root against the Giants but hate to see any injury.  Even personally, I want to beat someone at their best and if I win, great, if I lose, that's on me.  This injury wasn't even about blocking the plate, it was just a slide where his foot caught.  I have to believe Drew will need surgery but, as long as no ligaments, etc. were damaged significantly, he should be good to go by next season.

On a side note, I can't help but think that if Pablo Sandoval had injured himself sliding into plate like this, Giants fans would be whining about catchers blocking the plate.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

As a Giants fan I will just ignore all of the lame attempts at calling us out and say this.....

Injuries suck. No matter what player or team I hate seeing players miss the season.

Hopefully Drew is able to get back to his normal form in 2012.

Its called being a fan. JackassD Drew did us wrong and was a complete tool about it, so we are allowed to hold a grudge. We don't have to "get over it". And for all you self righteous people who say that you would not wish that injury on anyone, yes you would. There is someone out there you would wish a broken ankle on. I didn't say I wished he was dead. Got no problem with Stephen Drew and I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

I agree bronson, I was expecting Willis Mcgahee-esque footage given the warning above the video.

On a side note, I can't help but think that if Pablo Sandoval had injured himself sliding into plate like this, Giants fans would be whining about catchers blocking the plate.

People like to see gruesome injuries and medical deformities being exploited. That being said, the injury wasn't as visually gruesome as I was lead to believe and now feel somewhat cheated. Joe Theismann's leg injury-- Now THAT was gruesome. To compensate for this let down, I think I'm going to go watch that clip of Sid Vicious (the wrestler) jumping off the second turnbuckle and snapping his leg like a twig.
