Derek Jeter

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Derek Jeter may make the hand-wringing over the nixed Yankees-Rays doubleheader unnecessary as he singled in the first inning of Saturday afternoon's game against the Rays, leaving him just one hit shy of 3,000 for his career.

Leading off the bottom of the first, Jeter grounded David Price's 95 mph fastball on a 3-2 count into left for a single and the 2,999th hit of his career.

After Curtis Granderson popped up to shortstop, Mark Teixeira grounded into a double play to end the first inning.

It was Jeter's seventh hit in 26 at-bats against Price in his career, raising his career average against the Rays' left-hander to .269.

Jeter Watch: One more to go

Vintage Jeter, what a class act, Johnny Damon wanted to go shake his hand but his teammates said no. He will go down as the classiest Yankee of all time and certainly the best yankee shortsop ever. Congrats Jete.

Kudos to Jeter for getting his 3,000th hit and making it a game-tying HR to boot! He's truly an all-time great and understands pressure and the big stage maybe better than anyone in a long time. A terrific way to get 3,000, by a terrific and classy player.

I never understood the hatred towards his game. I get the Yankee hate. I hate them more than just about anyone. But anyone who loves the game and appreciates class and greatness should cherish this guy. The same goes for Riviera.
