Chipper Jones to need surgery?

Braves third baseman Chipper Jones has been having knee problems all season and now may have to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his bothersome right knee. The procedure would reportedly put him out three to four weeks.

"If I had to guess, I'd say I will probably have to get it done," Jones told Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Losing a month is a small price to pay if a procedure gets Jones right for the stretch run in late August and September. The Braves have a commanding lead in the NL wild card race and likely aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Jones has had two rounds of cortisone shots and has still struggled with the pain. Getting the surgery done just gets him closer to a full recovery, instead of playing with pain all season, which likely hurts his production.

Jones, 39, has a triple-slash line of .255/.338/.423, the worst of his illustrious career.

Chipper Jones to need surgery?

Martin Prado should be ready to return to the team after the All Star break and can fill in at 3rd Base for Chipper during his time off for the surgery. While the Braves would lose some power, Martin has been the Braves most consistent hitter since he cracked the starting lineup a couple of years ago, even becoming an All Star in his own right as an infielder, only moving to the outfield this season to accomodate Dan Uggla coming to the Braves and taking over the 2nd Base position.

If Martin can hit until Chipper can get back, and the production from Uggla and Heywood could get even remotely better than the first half of the season, I would expect Martin to move back to left field and then McClouth and Schaefer would both be battling out for Centerfield action trying to set the table for a big second half for the Braves. It's hard to believe they've done as well as they have with the stink Uggla and Heywood have put on the field so far; cranking things up could sure make things interesting after the All Star break.

Chipper Jones to need surgery?

This is a really tough call, 3-4 weeks, what if him being out of the lineup becomes a Marlins-like June for the Braves. Yeah he's one guy, but streaks happen. And this being his final season ? Is it as bothersome as the back & herniated disks that Oswalt is experiencing ? And what if the 3-4 weeks he's not able to come back and starts to resemble Uggla ? :)

Get the surgery Chipper, and give yourself/team a chance in August/September. If the team needs more than you to drive in runs, they really need to have a chance to realize this before the trading deadline. Atlanta isn't lacking pitching, that's already well known.
