A game between the Rangers and A's in Texas Thursday night yielded tragic news from off the field. During the second inning, Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton picked up a foul ball and tossed it up into the crowd. A fan leaned a bit over the rail to catch the ball, lost his balance and fell about 20 feet behind a video board. He was pronounced dead less than three hours later.

“We are deeply saddened to learn that the man who fell has passed away as a result of this tragic accident,” Rangers president and CEO Nolan Ryan said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Reportedly, the man who fell was a firefighter and was with his son, estimated to be 6 to 8 years old. (all info above courtesy of Foul Territory, a Rangers blog). A newspaper from the area of Brownwood, Texas has identified the man as an 18-year veteran of the fire department.

The Rangers clubhouse was closed after the game and the A's players were reportedly devastated after having witnessed the fall (Susan Slusser via Twitter). In fact, A's relief pitcher Brad Ziegler said he saw the man was conscious and asking stadium officials to look after his son.

"They had him on a stretcher. He said, 'Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself.' The people who carried him out reassured him. 'Sir, we'll get your son, we'll make sure he's OK,"' Ziegler said. "He had his arms swinging. He talked and was conscious. We assumed he was OK. But when you find out he's not, it's just tough."

Obviously the first and main concern is the man who perished and his son, but lots of fans have also wondered about Hamilton, who might be thinking that had he simply not thrown the ball into the stands, this could have been avoided.

"We spoke to the ballclub, they understood what has happened and we spoke to Josh," Ryan said. "I think as any of us would be, Josh is very distraught over this, as the entire team is."

In terms of whether or not Hamilton -- who did absolutely nothing wrong; in fact, was being a good person by attempting to provide a fan with a souvenir -- would play Friday, manager Ron Washington said: "I think we'll deal with that tomorrow when he gets here, to see how he feels."

@Oaklandfan50 - I wouldn't trust Cellardwellar or Scottymo.  They are playing good cop/bad cop with you.  Scottymo emailed me your personal info, and I yelled at him.  I'm totally on your side.  I don't know why these guys have it in for you.
