Here's your leading vote-getters at each All-Star position, with the Yankees and Brewers leading the way:

American League

DH: David Ortiz, Red Sox

C: Alex Avila, Tigers

1B: Adrian Gonzalez, Red Sox

2B: Robinson Cano, Yankees

SS: Derek Jeter, Yankees

3B: Alex Rodriguez, Yankees

OF: Jose Bautista, Blue Jays*

OF: Curtis Granderson, Yankees

OF: Josh Hamilton, Rangers

National League

C: Brian McCann, Braves

1B: Prince Fielder, Brewers

2B: Rickie Weeks, Brewers

SS: Jose Reyes, Mets

3B: Placido Polanco, Phillies

OF: Ryan Braun, Brewers**

OF: Lance Berkman, Cardinals

OF: Matt Kemp, Dodgers

* Overall leading vote-getter

** National League leading vote-getter

My initial thought is the fans got it pretty much right -- with, of course, the notable exception of Derek Jeter. He's the only one who has no business on the team, but 16 of 17 isn't too shabby.

All-Star starters announced-Beat it Jeter Haterz

Stop sippin the anti jeter-aide. He is a perrenial all star! Read Olney's article on ESPN about the magic that has been Jeter's career. He's incredible and while he is active in the sport, should always be e an all-*.

Some one said take the voting from the fans....and give it to who?? The sports writers and statisticians? zzzzzz...the fans are needed believe it or not....and what stats would you care to use? The stats from the first half of the season? What if the dude tanks in the second half? Its all about what the fans want as it absolutely should be....because they are the ones that buy the merch, pay for the tickets, and sheer watch the tv.

Why don't we just rename the all-star game to "The Yankees vs the National League" because that's what it seems like!  Derek Jeter only got on the team because he has more fans, this was not one of his better seasons at all! so many more SS better than him in the AL!

Talk about a popularity contest - Where is the outrage over Josh Hamilton (.298 10 42) being voted to the All-Star game?  Boesch .306 12 40, Melky .287 11 48 and 11 steals, Lind (I guess not eligible as an OFer, but has played the OF and could for an inning in the All-Star game) .305 16 50.  Even Nelson Cruz with his .252 20 52 has more of a case this year than Hamilton.

It should be based on players and coaches only!!!  Just like the NFL.  Derek Jeter is a has been.  He is on the decline.  Move on...

This is why Jeter shouldn't be an All Star...Do away with fan voting. That makes it a popularity contest. It should just be based an statistics.

there are 7 AL SS with a higher batting average than jeter
there are 6 AL SS with a higher OBP than jeter
there are 8 AL SS with a higher slug percentage than jeter
there are 5 AL SS with more stolen bases than jeter
there are 8 AL SS with more total hits than jeter
there are 10 AL SS with more doubles than jeter
there are 13 AL SS with more home runs than jeter
there are 10 AL SS with more RBI's than jeter
there are 4 AL SS with more runs scored than jeter

Jeter does not deserve to be on this all star team this year.
He's a middle of the pack short stop this year, and of course like every other year the votes are based on past achievements and popularity.  I'm not arguing Jeter is one of the best short stops in the history of baseball, but this year isn't one of his best years.  There are plenty of players who deserve the spot more than him.
Most notibly...
Asdrubial Cabrera
.292 14 homers 49 rbis with 12 stolen bases
he's having a great all around year.

upd901: What do you base Votto and Phillips soo much better than Fielder and Weeks?? Is it defense on the field, than you have a point, but for offense it isn't even close. Fielder is batting .302avg 22 HRs 71 RBIs and Weeks .274 15 HRs- 35 RBIs. Okay here is Votto .315 12 HRs and 52 RBIs... Not bad but the answer he was last yr, I take Jay Bruce right now. Phillips .292 8 HRs 45 RBI's, fair number also for a second baseman. Overall Phillips has more RBIs and higher average than Weeks but we most look that Weeks is off lead hitter and doesn't have as many RBI chances but does get to the plate more often, and that adds to lower avg. Votto vs Fielder ... Numbers do not lie, so that one is that! So please explain to me how Votto are just Head and Shoulders above Fielder and Weeks. By the way I am Cubs fan, so I don't have a dog in this fight.

I love that everyone is complaining about Jeter on the team.. even this author of the article.. name 3 SS in the AL that is better and more deserving than Derek Jeter?  And dont get me started on CC and David Robertson!
