Eduardo NunezDerek Jeter may be coming back just in time, as Yankees shortstop Eduardo Nunez is out of the team's lineup with a  tight right hamstring. Ramiro Pena will start in Nunez's place.

Nunez had two doubles in Saturday's victory over the Mets and since Jeter went on the disabled list, Nunez is hitting .339/.381/.525 with two home runs and five doubles in 59 plate appearances.

Jeter is expected to return to the Yankees' lineup on Monday. He played five innings in the field and went 1 for 2 with a  walk and a run scored in a rehab assignment at Double-A Trenton on Saturday. He reported no pain in his injured right calf and is expected to play again tonight for Trenton.

Jeter currently has 2,994 hits and manager Joe Girardi has said he will leadoff and play short when he returns.

What a crock? NY goes 14-3, Nunez hits .339 with 2HR and five doubles in 59 AB, and he's going to be benched for a guy that clearly is not better at the position. Forget the past. All that counts is what a player is going to produce on a go forward basis. Remember Wally Pipp. When he came back off the DL, they didn't send Gehrig back to bench. Total BS and politics. NY owes it to the fans to put the best team possible on the field, and not to play to sentimentality. Nunez has earned the job, and the right to play until he demonstrates that he can't. Affirmative action comes to the Yankees.

LOL...  Your looking for a repeat of Lou Gehrig/Wally Pipp.
Gotta figure Nunez will be there eventually if they dont trade him, maybe even next year...but not this year. You know they arent going to do that to Jeter this year. Too big of a year for him. And Nunez really needs to improve his defense before he becomes and everyday major league SS.

Jeter's replacement sitting out Sunday

We all knew that Pretty Boy would be back in time to be the focus of attention before the All-Star Game, so that his impassive and not-as-pretty-as-it-used-to-be countenance would be shown roughly 15,486 times during the game.  I wish him success in getting his precious six hits to 3,000, but beyond that, I'm sick of his constantly being the center of attention.

In his brief stint as the starting SS Nunez has hit well but both he and Pena have been very shaky on defense.

I dont really think it matters what jeter does during the regular season...If he's hurt for 150 games or bats .220..The truth is come playoff time the guy is always clutch...Yankees know that, that's why they paid him all that money..Not because he's going to hit .330 and be a gold glove..it's for the playoffs..
