Video: Fan pushes Stanton in the back

By Matt Snyder

Memo to fans everywhere: You aren't part of the game. Sorry, you just aren't. So when a right fielder comes over and makes a catch in the field of play, you have absolutely zero right to be angry or offended. You have even less right to put your hands on the player.

Yet that's exactly what happened in Safeco Field Saturday night with Mike Stanton and a few clowns in the stands down the right field line.

As Stanton went over and made a catch close to the stands -- he didn't even have to reach up into the crowd -- two fans were stepping over the side of the stands and onto the field in an attempt to garner a souvenier. Evidently the guy in the yellow shirt had an issue with Stanton doing his job, because the guy shoved Stanton in the back as he ran away. Stanton did turn around and exchange words and the fans were ejected from the ballpark.

Stanton points out: “He knows I can’t do anything. What am I going to do? Hit them back?” (Fish Tank blog)

Exactly. It's quite the cowardly act to shove or hit anyone in the back, but it's even worse to do so when you know that person can't do anything in response. It's too bad everyone couldn't just look the other way. Stanton is 6-foot-5, 248 pounds and one of the strongest players in baseball. He'd have had his way with a punk like that.

Given that the guy was seemingly trying to step on to the field to catch the ball, my guess is that he was just trying to get Stanton's attention so that Stanton would give him the ball. To call what that guy did a shove or a push is stretching it way too far. The guy tapped Stanton in the back, that's it. You of course shouldn't even do that, but let's not make a mountain out of a molehill.

What ever the fan's reason behind the "shove", it's very simple; don't touch the players! It's not rocket science, people.

Exactly.  My buddie and I were stunned nothing ever happened.  We figured touching the player for whatever reason would result in an automatic ejecction let alone stepping onto the playing field.  As far as we saw thess guys stayed until the end of the game.  It is not like security didn't know who did this as one of them was sitting accross the aisle from the idiots.

Wish he would've gone Ron Artest on him...that would've been fun to watch!

I was at that game and was surprised by this incident.  I kept watching for the fans to be ejected, but I don't thenk they ever were.  The umpires and security with police close by talked with Stanton before his next inning in the field.  I am guessing they determined it wasn't flagrant as nothing was immediately done.  Maybe it was a congratulatory pat on the back?

I have watched the Stanton pushing video over and over again and everyone keeps saying that Stanton and the so called"Fan"errrrr idiot in the stands exchanged words...yet i see no evidence of Stanton saying anthing to the idiot...all i see is a stare from Stanton that would kill so am i missing something or is the media just blowing this up?

If it had been a simple congratulatory pat on the back, I don't think Stanton would have reacted that way.  Either way, it was a really dumb thing to do, and security should have thrown out for gross stupidity if nothing else.

"Sir, there are young children here, and we don't want any of the vacuum between your ears to infect them..."

Now that we all understand more clearly, maybe they can run out to the parking lot before he gets in his car and invite him back in. After all, he didn't look angry.
